Reforger83
Having been a distant fan of Japanese trains, I've never really gotten to know them very well. So here are a few baseline questions to throw at the group to begin my immersion in JR. 1) Does JR and the other rail carriers have train symbols? If so, anyone know them? 2) Is there a comprehensive list of the locomotives and how to ID them available in book form...maybe Amazon? that I could purchase.... 3) Maps? Books? any recommendations any of you might have to educate myself on JR? I'm just getting started, so thanks for the patience.... ~Mark Link to comment

JR 500系
Adding on, regarding comprehensive books on the trains, you best bet is the actual time table that shows the roster and type of the train used and which line it runs on, like these: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10321645 image : http://www.1999.co.jp/itbig32/10321645a.jpg 1 Link to comment
Reforger83
Oh sir, this is EXACTLY the sort of book I am looking for, or at least one of the kind of books. I may be able to get my hands on one for 2800 yen, is that a fair price? Thank you for the info...anyone else have ideas, I am all ears! Link to comment
miyakoji
I'd look at the first link that katoftw included and click around to get some general background. Then, search on Wikipedia for the following: 103 series 115 series 183 series 201 series E231 series That covers a fair bit of the last 40+ years in Japanese trains Link to comment
Socimi
What about searching also JR 205 series and Tokyu 8000 / 8500 series? But basically you'll need to read wikipedia. Edited January 21, 2016 by DavideTreni Link to comment
