Kiha66
How do the new kato 115s compare to the tomix high grade versions? With the HobbySearch sale I'm considering getting the tomix shonan 115 set, but seeing the new kato set coming out in march I may wait for that one. Link to comment
serotta1972
The newer Kato 115's are on par with Tomix HG models IMHO, for me it's now it's just a matter of preference. Most of my 115's are Tomix and have recently purchased the Kato 115-800 and 300's and they are great. Prices are about the same. The HS prices are great and I'm seriously thinking about the 165's. serotta1972
Got me some nice modeling tools a while back and need to put them to use. I went to work on my Kato EF 58 and 65 and replaced the Rapido couplers and installed the detail parts and number plates. Oh man, it was a test of patience but worth the effort. Slowly developing my modeling skills and those micro needle tweezers are amazing. 5 Link to comment
Kiha66
Wow, those are some beautiful electrics Junior! Amazing what a difference changing out the rapido couplers does to the look of the model. Now you need to start collecting some JNR blue trains for them to pull! Link to comment
Densha
I believe I haven't seen the EF58 in this livery before, but it looks really good! Link to comment
JR 500系
Wow those couplers really do make a huge difference! Also, good job on the handrails! I tried attaching handrails too and boy they are difficult and a good job you have done! Link to comment
serotta1972
I can't take too much credit for the EF65 as much of the detail parts were pre-installed, I only had to replace the couplers which was a chore especially the little brass plate behind it and the put on the number plates. The number plates snapped in flush too unlike the EF58 where I had to use some glue to keep the side number plates in place. I will tackle the installing the crest another day. Link to comment
serotta1972
I forgot I had a another blue loco - EF66. I managed to install the roof details, front and side number plates and couplers but didn't succeed with the front grab irons and side plates. I will attempt another night - I had to put it down to save my sanity. I love the shape, grill and headlights of the EF66 - it has a classic look IMHO. 3 Link to comment
Pauljag900
Mmm,nothing but the trains? Plate track, stations, platforms, elevated track and trams, modelling tools, stickers, new couplers? Am I the only one who can see where this is heading? You are in serious danger of becoming a full blown modeller serotta" Edited February 9, 2017 by Pauljag900 4 Link to comment
serotta1972
I'm trying to distract myself from going online and buying more trains. I have a long list of detailing projects and I'm starting with my locomotives and then to the EMU's. Link to comment
serotta1972
Running random DMU's and one Hybrid on a double oval with a crossover. So many facets of this wonderful hobby and you get pulled into so many different projects but I always go back to my favorite - running trains! :) 5 Link to comment

One thing I find that helps to get the grab irons on is to use tiny bit of clay on the end of a toothpick to 'grab' the middle of it while you coax it into the holes. It doesn't put as much tension as tweezers do. Another option is to let a little white glue set up for a while on the end of a toothpick to do the same thing. A wet q-tip can be used to gently clean off the residue on the grab iron after you get it in place. Also since you have the Resort Shirakami too do you find that the motor gets a bit whiny at higher speeds? Edited February 16, 2017 by nah00 1 Link to comment
serotta1972
Hey nah00, thanks for the tip - I will try those methods. Ah yes, my HB E300 is whiny at any speeds - but I kinda like it. :) Link to comment
cteno4
Wax pencils also can do the same thing http://www.ebay.com/itm/4x-Wax-White-Gem-Crystal-Rhinestones-Bead-Picker-Pencil-Pen-Nail-Art-DIY-Tool-HA-/201344190809?hash=item2ee10c8959:g:A8sAAOSwEK9UCB0Q Jeff Link to comment
nah00
The whine doesn't bother me but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't straining the engine. My Kashima Rinkai DMUs make a similar sound (though it's more like a hum than a whine) and if I'm running another train at the same time (especially a freight train of a dozen kokis). Link to comment
serotta1972
Just a terminal session with my Kato 111, 115-300 and 115-800 with their complimentary Kumoyuni and or Kumoni. I followed the information sheet for the consist formation. Swapped the bodies of the 74-0 (with motor) and 83-800 (trailer) and it fits perfectly and the underbody detail and trucks looks to be the same. Now I have a 74-0 (trailer) with body mounted TN couplers to go with my Kato 111. Anyone know why they put 2 cars in between the end cars in the middle of the consist when the Kumoyuni and or Kumoni are in the consist? 2 Link to comment
serotta1972
TN Couplers Conversion Project continues... Still got a couple more trains to go and can't stop now because they improve the look of the trains dramatically. 10 Link to comment

serotta1972
Been investing more on infrastructure of late and the electrification project has begun starting with the viaducts. Looks like I need to acquire more real estate to have a proper Shinkansen set up. Running a Tomix 92803 and Kato 10-221 E3-0 Komachi. 6 Link to comment

serotta1972
I've come to accept my addiction and doing a little bit of infrastructure work is keeping me distracted from buying more trains so it's sort of a form of harm reduction to the wallet. 4 Link to comment
