I think i did find the Japanese style for me

I think i know now very well which style of Japanese train i like!

 

Well a picture say more than words..

is it the paint you like (with the curves) or the general shape? 

 

if it is the shape, the EMUs are all either ex-Keio Line series 3000 EMUs or based off of a similar design ...

The first train I know of that has this nose is the JNR 70 series from the early 1950s. The Keio 3000 series is a 60s design.

These type of fronts are called 'Shōnan Type' (湘南型, Shōnan Gata) and are indeed from the 1950s (1952) from the KuHa 86 from the 80 Series. Before this in 1950, the fronts of the 80 Series had three windows like this (link to Kawasaki Heavy). This was an evolution of the pre-war 52 Series 'Torpedo type EMU' (魚雷形電車, Gyorai Gata Densya), which were again inspired by the DRG (Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft) 'Fliegender Hamburger'.

 

After the remodelling of the 80 Series in 1952, dozens upon dozens of other EMU, DMU and locomotives had this design incorporated. It is hard to think of a railway company that hasn't had at least one model with this type of front running on their tracks.

 

The last true Shōnan Type trains that were produced were probably the Keiō 3000 Series (1988) and Seibu 3000 Series (1987), according to this Wikipedia entry. This makes the Keiō 3000 Series actually the end of the legacy, instead of the initiator.

The Seibu 3000 series have now vanished from the Seibu lines (all 4-door stock now), but a couple of units have been passed on to the Ohmi Tetsudo.

I thought the Seibu 3000 Series have completely been gotten rid of and not resold. The Ōmi railway does run some 3-door ex-Seibu trains, but these are all old 101 Series (also with a Shōnan Type front).

 

P.s. guess I was wrong:

 

 

Now why would a small company need two sets of four cars for? This'd only seem feasible for one or two morning rush-hour runs... Unless, of course, knowing Ōmi RR, they'll completely rebuild these trains into a few 2-car formations. :P

If they are cheap and reliable and come with spares, then they can be used regardless or numbers or variety. For a smaller company it could be feasible to run fully unique stock.

 

For example there are 2 and a half old sets still in use in Budapest on the Csepel island suburban with the missing half already in the museum. They keep 4 half sets operational with one usually under maintenance (or spare). These 52 years old trains are still good enough to run as rapids in the morning and afternoon rushes.

To answer one question, i like the face, the 2 windows design with a slightly V form ( JNR 70, 80 series) added to the V paint/decoration. Specially as those are clean Front/End train. No door to pass trough.

 

Now i know what else i should "budget" ;)

Some new ones that should fit your style coming out as tomytec models. These are pretty inexpensive and you add motors and details as you want,mso lower entry cost.

Unfortunately, the price went up about 10% on the rr collection set. These come as a set of 10. If you buy the set you get them all. The individual packages don't have marked on them what is in them so if you buy them individually it's random chance what you get. Some shops open them and sell the specific models, but usually then they put the price on these up higher as you know what you are getting (and a few are just never wanted much and don't sell this way). You may have to either try some of the more obscure sources in Japan to get the individual ones you want (ebay sometimes as well), but if you want 5 or more then it's probably going to be cheaper to buy the whole set (and maybe sell off the ones you don't want). Since these are sort of for the collecting market they usually just come and then don't get remade, so some sets go fast while you can find some around for a long time, never know how fast you need to jump until too late!

 

You can then buy the mechs separately as you want to power them along with metal wheels for trailing cars. It adds up, but still a little cheaper usually than pre made models and many times this is the only place some more obscure models and variations are made. Does let you spread the cost out some. Unfortunately the mech costs went up recently with the rerelease from around 2400¥ to around 3200¥, but a few of the older less expensive motor units are still in stock at Modeltrainplus.com and loco1hobby.com.

you are very welcome! you can always gamble, i just did on collection 19 at modeltrainplus!

 

i had the Wakasa Railway WT-3000 and wanted the Shimabara Railroad 2550, but couldnt find it by itself. when doing an order i saw modeltrainplus had the collection 10 as just take a random pick and went for it for $6 and guess what?! got it!

I pictured alemino on the couch passed out drooling with opened tomytec boxes all around him and a train sticking from his arm... another unfortunate Mokei-tetsu victim... when will it end!

The front design of these trains bear some resemblance to the Re 4/4 and Re 6/6 as I have been looking at a lot of them lately.  :)
