cteno4
from profit of the way on jtrains yahoo group interesting photo exhibit on japan railway history Rediscovery--A Legacy of Railway Infrastructure During the Meiji period (1872-) in Japan, a nationwide railway network was constructed for the distribution of goods. The ingenuity required to lay and connect rails in varying, often harsh topographical conditions was a crystallization of the technology that led railways through “places with no roads,” or what might be called “creative wisdom embodied in design” to fit each location and region. With time’s passage, distribution methods diversified and energy-efficient means evolved, so many railways were no longer needed. Amid this, there are numerous examples of railways being preserved and used in their region as a legacy that passes down human experience and wisdom to future generations. This exhibition displays 14 carefully selected remnants of railways still being used after their closure. Along with route maps from those times and background explanations, it also presents many dynamic photos by the civil engineering photographer Houichi Nishiyama. http://www1.lixil.co.jp/gallery/exhibition/detail/d_003225.html 2F Lixil Gallery (Tokyo) August 27 - November 21 201510AM - 6PMClosed Wednesdays.Free admission. cheers jeff 2 Link to comment

bikkuri bahn
I actually remember seeing a train run over one of the lines profiled in that exhibition (the port line in Yokohama that runs above Yamashita Park on a viaduct). As I recall it was a DE10 hauling some freight cars, must have been in the early 1980's. Link to comment
