Upholstery?

OK, here's a geeky question for you--has anybody ever repainted the seats inside an N-scale train to make them look more look upholstery and less like blank, smooth plastic? How?

I sure haven't…I guess a sprayed-on coat of matte paint would go a long way to helping, with a black wash perhaps? And then, like Micro Ace often does, paint in a headrest?

I haven't tried yet, but I have thought about doing it, especially with some trains having huge windows making it easy to see the interior.

I'd probably just use flat paints, maybe semi-gloss for certain bits.

Matte paint and a wash sounds like a good idea--even a solid color would look better than blank plastic. Something that looked like printed fabric would be even better, but that's hard to do at 1:160.

I just have to pick something to experiment on. Maybe an Amtrak car. :)  Not the Haruka.

You could stipple some contrasting color, to get a more texture effect maybe?

That could work--as long as I can be pretty consistent with it.

I don't think seeing a train from a distance which makes them as small as an N-scale train up close, you would notice any sort of texture. You could of course give the headrests a different colour, possibly add a thin stripe on the left and right of the chairs, and the backs of the chairs could be a different colour. The floor could be a different colour as well.

That should be enough to make the interior look much better already =)

I use to in HO, but never with N. I can't see far enough, well enough to notice the interiors on an N-scale train.

To me, the important question is whether you notice them in a photo. But then, I like photography and modelling more than actually operating trains.

That's true--a couple of coordinated matte colors could make a big difference.

Scott - are you going to add people inside the cars? There is a thread at the forum about inexpense figures you can order from China.

I knew it....once the Malaysian factories got going, I guess the Party decided that they could make more money by selling off the workers themselves.

LOL - I think my company is going to buy some of those people, even thought they're N scale....they work hard. :cheesy
