Hi Everyone,

I arrived in Nagoya a couple of months ago. I'm working for an US company in the automotive industries. I should stay in Japan for a least 2~3 years.

I'm new in the N scale and don't yet about Japanese trains. With time I'll likely have question for you.

Maybe I can start with my first question. I'm building a small layout (45cmx60cm). I'm looking to purchase material for the layout and scenery. Beside Tokyu Hands at Takashimaya at Nagoya station and Joshin Toys Land in Osu district, where to go?

I've done some search, only found address in Osaka and Tokyo.

cheers

Claude

I live right now on Inazawa aprox, 10 mim in a JRCentral train to Nagoya Station

First of all Welcome

- Tokyu Hands at Takashimaya at Nagoya station = i think is on the 5th or 6th floor but is small only does have some starter sets a little small structures and is expensive

- Joshin Toys Land in Osu district = in the last floor and same floor and the bb weapons and guns, price is right, lots of trains, a little small part is HO scale, structures and tracks are good

- Pochi Hooby Land is a good small store is USED goods and depends of the model could be expensive is very near of Nagoya Station go to the little door on the right of the pic and upstairs second floor

i recommend you search in on-line stores as well, rakuten does have a points system (at least 1% return in points) , or the yahoo auctions (need a little bit of japanese)

http://global.rakuten.com/en/ english page but a poor auto-translated

Aichi does have several little small shops but most of times is expensive from the internet

If you have time on weekend we can go to the Museun or shopping together

cheers

Thanks for the welcome!

thanks NuclearErick for all address!

I live in Meito-ku, work close by Nagoya station but often on business trip.

In general I'm busy on week-end with the family but I can find some time.

I have a car, I can drive to Tam-Tam, seems to be easy to access to the shop from where I live.

I'm just starting learning Japanese, seems Yahoo auction a good place for finding rare items.

Welcome Claude! Glad you are on a great adventure in japan and have found Japanese n scale trains and this forum! I think you will find a lot of helpful folks here! It's a very addictive hobby so lock up the credit cards!

Welcome to the forums. Personally I have never been in Nagoya, but I think the Meitetsu and Kintetsu networks are worth checking out for ideas. If you get interested in them, Greenmax is your main provider in rolling stock!

Hobby Land Pochi also does online delivery and have sales events from time to time (also in Nagoya) where you can get rolling stock for a tad lower price and stuff that isn't sold online (either low interest or 'damaged' sets). I once got a crazy good deal there with a full 10-car Tomix Sōtetsu 11000 Series for ¥10000, so it's worth checking it out.

Thanks all for the greetings!

Yeah my credit card might burn sometime.

I was looking for the rolling stock of the Nagoya Higashiyama Line. Have not find anything except the B Shorty train but it's not available any more.

Any other suggestion?

I could move the request in another section of the forum.

Tomytec once made a limited run of 12,000 packs of 2-car Nagoya Municipal Subway 300 types that once (IIRC until 2001~2002) ran on the Higashiyama line. Now they can be found in Argentina and on the Kotohira Takamatsu Railway. These can be found on auctions and other 2nd hand websites. Hobby Land Pochi sells them for around ¥3500.

The problem with the Higashiyama line is that all trains are 15.59 meters long, on 1435mm track, with 3rd rail powering, and thus not very popular on their resale value. The stainless steel ones don't seem popular particular and I can't even think of a small manufacturer that makes would potentially make these trains as models. The best shot at these would be to make them yourself.

Thanks for the find. the Tomytec 300 looks greenish fluo, they were the same at that time in Nagoya?

I would need a good base if I had to make it myself.

The hue of the pictures make it look greenish, but it is indeed yellow, like the colour of the Higashiyama line. IIRC the Higashiyama line never changed the colour, except that the trains had a thin elegant blue stripe under the window in the beginning period:

For now, it looks like there isn't enough interest in the Nagoya Subway network to have big manufacturers going into this, so the best and easiest way would be to make a model out of lasercut or otherwise plotted sheet material (cardboard, styrene) and a good 16m power chassis (Tomytec TM-10 if available). However, alternatively, Meitetsu is a good alternative with many interesting trains, lines and settings:

This video is very dated and over half of the trains don't run any more and have been replaced, but it gives a nice impression of what Meitetsu is like in general.

I'll pass for the scratch build and I you suggested I'll look at other systems.

The Meitetsu video is nice, yes many trains I didn't knew.

Thanks again.

You might be interested in snapping some shots of the 5000 Type quickly, as they are apparently being withdrawn from service at the end of this month:
