The seat mechanism was really cool!

I saw the auto swivelling seats on the Keihan. The first time you see them in action live you eyes want to drop off your sockets - it's that surreal...

HaHa! My memories of a trip back in 1985 to Japan were triggered by the video. Can't remember where we were, but the double unit suburban train came in to station which was the last stop and dead end. We were not heading back on the train ,but being the last to leave the coach, I was watching the guard or conductor with white gloves reversing all the seats . He made it look such a  smooth action. Anyway , I also recall walking down the platform and my wife suddenly realising,I had left my small bag with passport, etc on the coach. We ran back just as the guard came out of the coach holding my bag . Whew! the train left a couple of minutes later. A very close call. We were with a tour group .

That reminds me, I noticed the other day going through Tokyo Station that the Tohoku Shinkansen under-platform cleaning offices are visible from the easternmost Tokaido line platform (I can't remember the platform number offhand) - the Shinkansen platforms are higher than the old zairaisen ones so there's a good view if anyone's interested in a "below the scenes" look.
