I know links to several high quality European tram layouts have been posted, but here is a series of densely modeled U.S. traction modules.  He incorporates some online freight customers, and uses mostly street trackage.  There may not be any direct connection to Japanese tram modeling, but I find his work quite inspiring, particularly the visual complexity and high level of detail.
