Das Steinkopf
Sadly the time for the remaining members of the class to have their date with the gas axe is not far away, on the 28th of March 2019 EF200-18 was at the head of the final freight train to be hauled by the class from Shimonoseki to Suita, they have all now been officially retired from service. https://trafficnews.jp/post/84853 Edited March 30, 2019 by Das Steinkopf 1 2 Link to comment
lighthouse
It's interesting that the EF200 was retired before the much older EF66. 🤔 1 Link to comment
railsquid
The EF66-100s are only slightly older (1989-1991 vs 1990-1993) and the EF200s apparently couldn't live up to their full potential due to the additional strain they placed on the power infrastructure so effectively ended up as a small, non-standard class with no particular advantage over the EF66-100s. 1 Link to comment
Das Steinkopf
The EF200’s are a much smaller class compared to the EF66-0’s as there was 56 built including the prototype EF66-901, the EF200’s totalled 21 units including EF200-901. When JNR was split up JRF received the first 40 of the EF66-0’s and would have received a substantial parts holding, coupled to the fact that the 33 members of the EF66-100 class share a number of components and running gear of the EF66-0’s there is more than enough bits and pieces to keep the remaining two EF66-0’s (EF66-27 & EF66-30) running until the frames are well and truly stuffed.
