Rail Announcement
Hello, Can anyone help with locations for these pictures taken in 2004? Thanks. http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h4491be99#h4491be99 http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h4490b6f3#h4490b6f3 http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h1947737f#h1947737f Link to comment
miyakoji
The first one is a Nankai Airport Rapid service, I think it's at Izumisano Station, just based on how the wall/roof of the structure looks, and wikipedia's picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izumisano_Station The second one is a 700 series shinkansen arriving at Hakata. At the top center of the image there's a building in the distance, I assume a hotel or apartment, that says Hakata. Closer, just below the catenary support, you can make out 九-something, and luckily it's on google map. It's the Kyusetsu Building, center of this map https://goo.gl/maps/yTnON The last one is the toughest I think, do you have a higher resolution version of this? If the writing on that apartment building right of center was legible, I think we could figure it out. I assume it's the Kyudai Line, the train is headed for Yufuin. Link to comment
katoftw
The first 2 photos have a description at the bottom. Only the Y-DC125 is without a description. Could be anywhere from Kurume to Oita on the Kyudai Line in Kyushu. Or a little north and south of Oita. Although at a guess I'd assume somewhere between Beppu and Oita. It is a double line and just isn't rural enough to be anywhere between Yufuin and Kurume. Edited May 2, 2015 by katoftw Link to comment
Rail Announcement
Thanks for your help with these. Much appreciated. Regarding the last picture, this picture : http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h10cc28af#h10cc28af was taken an hour earlier if that helps to give a rough idea of where the latter picture was taken. E6系
Hello Mr Rail Announcement, Please allow me to assist you with identifying the location of the KiHa in the third picture. The third picture is clearly a JR Kyushu KiHa 125. Y-DC stands for "Yellow, one-man Diesel Car". They are used on rural lines throughout Kyushu. The lead car is Y-DC125-16. It is based in the Oita Railway Division, Oita. The head sign is marked destination "Yufuin". So it is running on the Kyudai Main Line between Kurama and Yufuin. I have travelled the line several times but I am not familiar enough to pick the exact location. I can see a radio tower in the background. Perhaps you can use Google Earth to pinpoint the location. An interesting exercise, but one that I don't have time to pursue. I trust I have been able to assist you. Link to comment
E6系
I just have another idea: If you can find a cab ride video of the Kyudai Main Line from Oita to Kurama, then you will see that view somewhere along the route. Then you will know your location. Good luck. Link to comment
katoftw
I've had a good look and I cannot find it. No overhead lines so should be Kyudai Line, but not sure myself when overhead power lines were added to the Nippo Line Between Beppu and Oita. Also look very much like the Kyudai Line section just south of Oita Station, but at some stage also this was converted from ground level to viaduct level track system. This was also done to the north of Oita Station, so you may find the location does not exist anymore. I also had a look at the whole Kyudai Line and just east of Kurume and south of Hita also looked promising, but just not it. So many have the side street, power poles, rusty diamond fence and guard rail, but just not quite right. Edited May 4, 2015 by katoftw Link to comment
Ochanomizu
Hello, Please allow me to contribute to the debate on the location of the third photograph: Firstly, if the meta-data of the photograph is accurate, then it was taken on 5th June 2004 at 09:25. Note the shadows. This indicates that the train is running on a piece of track heading north-south. The train itself is heading south. Secondly, the track on the Kyudai Main line is single track, except for passing sections at stations. This indicates that the train is approaching a station. I would suspect that the photographer might be standing on the station platform. If my assumptions are correct, we are looking for a station running north-south, with a road adjacent the platform on the east side. 1 Link to comment

bikkuri bahn
Maybe it's just me, but it seems both pics have the train running away from the photographer- aren't the rear marker lights on? As well as no driver where he should be sitting? However, if that's the case, both trains are running wrong direction... 1 Link to comment

The time of 09.25 is actually British time as I forgot to alter the camera's settings, so the picture will have been taken in the evening. This picture: http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h44c8aee5#h44c8aee5 was taken at 0819 British time and also shows 125-16 so, if not the actual location of the picture in question, it must be very near. However 125-16 is running as a single car in the latter picture , whereas it has been coupled to to another 125 in the first picture. This picture, taken two minutes later , shows 125-16 in the station. http://railpicturelibrary.zenfolio.com/p773535743/h2d925ff#h2d925ff Edited May 4, 2015 by Rail Announcement Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Those two last pictures were taken at Hita Station. Identified by track layout and the newish grey apartment building in the right background, using google earth. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Also note the shunting signals, perhaps that explains any wrong way running needed for consist changes? Link to comment
Rail Announcement
Thank you very much. After looking at Google maps I think the first picture (with the road on the right) was taken just outside of Hita station. Thanks again. 1 Link to comment
E6系
Ah ... so, Thank you for the additional information about your camera. In that case, you are correct with your location. You took the photo at approximately 33°18'56.70"N, 130°56'24.00"E and the train was heading north-west !!! This is when I enjoy computing. It is amazing that based on a few facts I can pinpoint your location to within a few metres, don't you think? Link to comment

katoftw
That was one of the locations I shortlisted, but it just didn't look right when I first looked. I guess the angle of the original photo with the photographer up against the fence and the google camera on the roof of the car in the center of the road made differences. Link to comment

There is no trains for 3 hours in the middle of the day on this line. So you find the first school time trains in the mid afternoon and the peak hours trains are double car consists. bikkuri bahn
I reckon the kiha 47 consist visible in the pocket track is used for peak hour school traffic, they are much better at handling crowds than the smaller dmu units. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
2004 or present? Then and now, I reckon. Japanese Wikipedia still has these units in operation on this line. This video also states that a kiha 47 consist runs one r/t day between Oita and Hita- being the first train from Oita, laying over in Hita, and returning to Oita in the evening, being based at the Oita Rolling Stock Depot. katoftw
Firsts train to and from Oita are at 6am and 11pm. It looks as though the first train from Oita couples with another car or cars at Yufuin before travelling to Hita. Lots of train between Bungomori and Hita, Yufuin and Oita, but limited that do the whole distance. Difficult to make sense as a whole looking at an electronic timetable. edit/ I was watching a video of the Hohi Line last night filmed in 2013, and it had Kiha 47s, 125s, 185s and 200s. Kyudai Line shares same rolling stock. Edited May 6, 2015 by katoftw Link to comment
katoftw
This video at 1:45 shows the train departing Hita and going past the blue overpass bridge where the original photo was taken. Also shows the train running up the "wrong direction" as in the original picture. And if you keep watching, you'll understand why. Not really wrong direction. And a Kiha 47 is present also parked on a siding at the start of the video. Edited May 6, 2015 by katoftw Link to comment
katoftw
I was planning on travelling on the Kyudai for my next trip, but Viewed Hita more of a tourist spot then anything and hadn't given it any thought. After seeing you picks and seeing the google map aerials photos. It looks like a good place for photos and watch some operations. Thanks. Link to comment
