Last week my most expensive Hobbysearch bill came: 146,000 yen 😮 That's the disadvantage if the 4 orders are combined 🤷‍♂️

anyway, I would ask  you an opinion about Shinkasen N gauge booklet, I'm tempted but for wht I saw on Hobbysearch is around 120 pages, sincerly is too small for contain all the history.. or not?  let me/us know!

I'm tired to collect everything that have a Shinkansen photo on the cover or I need to take a decision, sell, gift or burn all the unnecessary....

Tomix JR East Hoki 800 ballast train arrived today along with 2 of the Yamato Nekology Koki 106s as the Koki rule applies. 6746177C-0614-4A79-A3F2-CD2D96753181.thumb.jpeg.61993e8a2530cdd4ae93edff13770382.jpeg

The Hoki set makes up a nice train with some very fine details. From what I can tell, it is the same mould as 2777 version with different numbers and blackened wheels but I would also say those are a pretty good model already. The blackened wheels are great if not a bit shinier than Kato’s offering. I wish Tomix would switch all their rolling with black bogies over to these.  The loads are also a nice inclusion but look a little plasticky. A thin layer of rail ballast over the top will take care of that just to take away the toy like appearance. The load piece has reinforcement underneath which would not allow for further wire detailing to the hopper should you wish to switch between loaded or unloaded in the future. I might consider getting a set of 2777 to model a couple of empties.

There are clear instructions on how to disassemble the hoppers to make adding the extra details much easier. This will also allow for addition detailing to the ballast chutes which don’t stay black for long.

The final inclusion is some red marker ends. These look pretty poor compared to the Kato Koki ones. I may try and paint the fine edges grey or if that fails, get some more Kato ones.

The Tomix Kokis look pretty nice too. I have some HO ones which are extremely nice indeed. The colour on the N scale containers look slightly darker and the printing is ok but a little rough in places. The Ta-Q-Bin ones were certainly better but nice to have some additions to make a longer train with some variety.

Mat, office magnifying glasses as well as bandhead magnyfiying ... everything fits.

Edit: What I really do like is the drawer where I can put all I need frequently without being obliged to dig into the big box above.

Easy to grab, everything at its place ... far better than my old RGR carton box I was using to store them. 30 Euros at Amazon.

I stole one of my wife's old small sewing cases year ago for the same reason.  Way too small after years though.  Probably half the size of yours.  Time to upsize and upgrade.

After months of collecting and waiting for the preorders a mammoth order from RG Rokko just arrived this morning! As always the package was beautifully put together so that everything was snug and protected.

Hello Massimo 🙂

In my opinion the book is worth it. All information about the models is included, including the train compositions and comparisons of the individual series, Maximum Speeds (and a special section with special paintwork, etc.).

My latest RG-Rokko order arrived today! Some more magazines, Kintetsu 5820 series by Greenmax, JNR C11 and some rolling stock to go with it.

Customised the urethane a bit for the rolling stock...

#stillwaitingforPart2 ...

I know @Kamome has done a good short write-up of the Tomix 97949 JR East HoKi 800 ballast hoppers, but I'll chime my ten cents' worth in. Can't save five cents' worth as we haven't had five cent coins in New Zealand for fourteen years now! Pointless digression aside, This Way to Trains ...

IMG_6275.thumb.JPG.8a1cc7ad1dcb3c84f3bc64b8a4904bae.JPG  IMG_6276.thumb.JPG.0ddd3ab0862df6a4c7555e86ebd8647b.JPG

After a little research, these wagons represent some of the last 100 wagons built in 1974 which were slightly different to the earlier production versions, having negligibly longer decks and type TR225 bogies in place of the older Bettendorf TR41C bogies. Surprisingly, for a type that dates back to the 1950s, there are still 145 of these wagons still running today across JR East (105) and JR West (30). That total of course doesn't include the similar Class 931 ballast wagons for Shinkansen maintenance, of which apparently JR Central and JR West still have examples in service despite having had their service registrations "cancelled".

And all this was gleaned from, of all unlikely places, Japanese Wikipedia which has better sourcing and writing than the unreliable English version which I was taught not to rely on at university. I think I can take my nerd hat off now ...

Anyhow, back on track ... As per Kamome's review, these wagons come factory-fitted with chemically blackened wheels which make a nice change from the standard shiny pizza-cutters we tend to associate with Tomix. They also come with a factory-fitted removable 'ballast' insert, and twelve sprues containing release levers and mechanisms, brake cylinders, and the all-important number boards. There's also a thirteenth sprue with two end-of-train marker discs, but these are not the nicest looking gizmos, being just straight red plastic, which IMHO just looks both cringy and tacky and cries out for painting before their locating pins are sliced 'n diced off and the discs are glued to the backside of an unsuspecting vic ... oops, I mean, hopper.

IMG_6278.thumb.JPG.394d9348bb78945c9de72a63560dfb65.JPG

So far, I've only assembled four of the eight hoppers which look quite smart here behind DE10 1654. They are not the easiest to assemble, but I'd recommend taking a close look at Yokohama Models' blog which features some helpful tips for both putting these wagons together, and optional upgrading which includes additional bits like the top braces, hopper door opening rods, and even replacing those Tomix pizza-cutters with Kato wheels. Here's the links to the blog:

Part One - disassembly and Standard parts applied

Part Two - go beyond and add some extra details!

These wagons may need a little further work to reach their true potential, but they don't look too bad as they come, and I wouldn't be doubting their running qualities either. And I'm glad I got them! They fall neatly into my Rule #1 "Seen and/or ridden on" category, as my photo from 16 May 2019 attests. According to Japanese Wiki, wagon HoKi 1344 was one of 220 built in 1963; I caught it being shunted into the maintenance sheds at Oku Switchyard outside Tokyo by DE10 1752. I had to shove my iPod or camera lens, I can't remember which, through the depot fence to get those shots but the maintenance staff weren't fazed by this Western tori-tetsu taking an interest in their work. Just a normal day on the job for them, I guess!

I’ve just finished my rake of 8. Well, not painted the handbrake end grab rails and ladders white yet. Sorry this probably belongs in the Improvement thread.

The red marker ends come out alright. I painted them a medium grey acrylic whilst on the sprue. Then for the dot added some slightly diluted enamel red so it spread to the edges without overspill. Look way better anyway.

For the ballast, I tried using some fine ballast over the top of the part but looked too thick. Maybe ok with a piece of plasticard instead of the ballast moulding supplied. Anyway, I stripped the ballast off and decided to paint with a light grey acrylic, thinned dark grey enamel wash and very light grey acrylic dry brush to give some variation and removed the plastic sheen. I may sample a plasticard insert too.

Edit: Also just realised from the picture, I put 2 of the number boards back on the wrong wagons. Had to remove them while testing the real ballast.

Latest from RG-Rokko: Popondetta's Nankai 30000 Series 'Kouya' Limited Express:

I was a bit nervous to buy something from a relatively new manufacturer but it seems like good quality to me - the painting is good and I don't see any obvious issues with how it looks (but I'm not an expert). The motor is quiet and runs well without any stuttering. You also get a Popondetta cloth so you can clean the precious wipe any fingerprints off (according to the manual instructions).

Japan Railway Journal had a highlight about the Revaty Limited Express on last weeks episode. So I checked, and it turns out Tomix does make the model AND I have ridden on it. So that meant I had to buy it...

I've never been on it but I would like to get the Revaty, as it is cool.  I would rather KATO do a version though.  Probably easier for DCC.
