I finally succumbed and bought a model of the ugly sister. I love it. I first saw this train in the Maglev museum. I thought it must be a concept train. It was just so awful looking. But I've come to develop a certain fascination with it.

The RG Rokko guys stuffed it with tons of these extra foam bits to eliminate any movement in transit. Touching!

In the mid to later 1990s I was traveling frequently to Japan for work. The 300 was the hot ticket on the Tokaido line and was used on the Nozomi service. My boss boss at the time found out there was a Shinkansen faster than we had taken from Tokyo to Nagoya and was intent on taking it back to Tokyo. He got the admin assistant at the company we were visiting to reschedule us from the Hikari to the Nozomi. That was my first time to see and ride the 300. It was definitely different looking than the 100 series that was operated on the Hikari. The Nozomi seemed more exclusive at that time than it is today. I think it was a less frequent option on the Tokaido Shinkansen as compared to today.

It’s Tokonami-san’s signature move. He must spend quite some time preparing  each package.

 

Nice Nose-omi. That 300 front is somewhat fascinating. Almost looks like a war machine or steam-punk design.

Just want to share a story in 2018 , when I bought an D51-200 2016-8 from AMZ.JP

It was 10,000 yen when I had seen in first time , another day I checked again around midnight and the price was discounted to 7,xxx Yen.  

so decided to purchase tomorrow morning, but , again price jump up above 10,000 Yen. 

Im not sure what's going on , but , finally, I could buy it at 6,718 Yen ,

Amazon can be fickle, I’ve grabbed a deal like that a few times like 40-50% off retail, gone a few days later. Those are my main buys with Amazon or a few odd bits or stuff I blew it and didn’t get it in time at the usual suspects.

That’s some nice sniping!

 

Prices can also be wildly inflated on Amazon with 3rd party sellers. Easily said for those of us in Japan who can shop around.

 

You have to rule with your head in these cases. I was looking at something on Amazon Japan the other day and the price was 33% more than Kato’s SRP and was also available with the manufacturer. 

 

It’s always best to shop around and if you see something at a good price, don’t wait. But like many others on this forum , I don’t give more money to Big Jeff unless i have exhausted other options.

Time for some more unboxing photos! Exhibit H arrived before 8:30 this morning, followed later in the day by another package I’ll call ‘H1’.

 

So! What’s inside the two boxes?

Exhibit ‘H1’, the 2014-15 Tomix Guide. $10.00 on TradeMe, plus $7.00 freight. I brought it for use as a reference guide (like any good modeller does!). This now brings my Japanese catalog collection up to seven; still a ways to go to catch up with my Märklin catalog collection though, every issue from 1995/96 up to 2019/20!

 

And now, the big box:My new 103 series has arrived!

The next arrival should be the Tomix 98735 Express Freight Train Set which is now in stock at HobbySearch, followed by some more Rhäetische Bahn stock when that finally releases. Talk about something to look forward to!

That 103 set is nice.  I remember riding those on the Nara Line.  The catalog looks like it could be a real risk to one's wallet 🙂

I haven't had much time to digest it yet, but for me the real risk looks to be the Tomytec buildings and vehicles at the back.

 

In the meantime, I still have my 103 to assemble. Tomorrow I'll take it to my grandfather and we'll attempt to install the radio antenna above the drivers' cabs and the decals. I've managed to get the guard irons onto the leading bogies myself already, but putting anything else on will happen tomorrow afternoon before I test it.

Small order from Model Trains Plus.  Two buildings:  Tomytec 160 Contemporary Apartment and Tsugawa farm shed as a complete contrast (but I wanted to try their kits).

The other two items:  Green Max Kiha 54's and two Kato coaches.

I have a small Hokkaido collection and, having procrastinated and missed out on the Tomix Scenes of Hokkaido set, decided I should purchase the last Soya line set available at MTP.  Especially as these are used elsewhere on Hokkaido and MTP was significantly less costly for them.

I have a sweet running Kato DF20 which I bought with the thought of kitbashing for another project but it runs so well and looks so nice, I could not bear to do that.  So two old coaches and instant tourist train.

Yes Aodaisho is a non-venomous green rat snake. It was the nickname given to these green coach trains but wasn’t the name of the train itself.


It was painted this colour from 1956 after the line between Tokyo and Osaka was electrified. Previously the same train was painted in a brown colour, known as grape. The brown was intended to hide the soot from steam locomotives so after electric locos took over this was no longer an issue.

 

The train, Tsubame, which means Swallow and it’s sister train Hato, Pigeon, were the main expresses at this time connected the 2 main cities. 

I believe it started running in about 1949 and then, as mentioned, painted green from 1956. These were eventually replaced by 151 series EMU Kodama services from 1958 onwards. These new EMUs reduced the travel time from 7hours 30 mins to 6 hours, 30 mins.

 

From 1964 onwards the journey became possible by Shinkansen and took only 4 hours.

Kato 2016-3 D51 Standard & 2016-4 Gisel, in german called "Quetschesse" 😅

 

Both are at home in Hokkaido until the mid-70s.

First the Kiha-150... I have yet to have a Kiha 150, and best yet one with 2 different colour schemes... Now we can all couple with the Kiha-40s and Kiha-143s! Time to hunt for a Kiha-54 to complete the collection...
