Such a normal scene in Japan.  When I was admiring and taking photos of a train here in the US, I was asked to leave the platform area and if I had ticket.

When I was a kid in 1970’s England you just paid 2p each for a platform ticket. Much simpler.

As long as you don't use a tripod, or do anything silly, they don't seem to mind here.

What really gets me every time I see it are the "announcement recorders" who hold up microphones on sticks directly against platform loudspeakers to record announcements.

I would love to get some clean announcements!  I have the melodies, but the only announcements I can find are like being on the platform with all the other noises.

One of these Chuo Line things is not like the others.

Correct.

I don't remember if the front panel is actually yellow, or it's a trick of the light.

What amazes me is how that arrow is pointing directly at the older man ~  😛

In the fading days of the Heisei era, you can still find reminders of JNR (国鉄), here adorning the guide map of a JR East-owned company housing complex near Kichijoiji.

Kokutetsu is a patch, any idea if this was originally municipal or prefectural housing?

Here's an English-language blog post: https://thetokyofilesdanchi.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/kichijoji-kitamachi-company-housing/

Comparing the last photo there, from 1974-1978, to present google map, the southern-most group of 5 buildings and the nearest of the next block north existed at that time.

It looks like it was covered up by something which fell off at some point (checks Street View) -  ah yes, here in June 2018: https://goo.gl/maps/acH6HWBEHfPPSoEs9

though going back in history, the tape was applied between late 2014 and early 2015, but was not present at all before then.

Probably why I never noticed that before even though I've been passing by that way since 2011 or so quite often, my interest in railways didn't pick up until around 2015.

Ah I see.  Looking at the background of your pic, it looks like they've started to control that greenery.  The neighbors in that otherwise nice looking area probably appreciate it.

EF65 1104 at Haijima:

Shots from mobile camera in dull lighting conditions, mainly interesting as the loco was sitting there not far from the platforms so I could take a look at some detail, e.g.:

which gives me the idea to e.g. paint the edges of the shunter footplates.

A couple more shots lurking at the bottom of this album: EF65

A bit of an unusual day... got to the platform at Mitaka and a (the) East i-E pulled in and disgorged a small bunch of people, some in the usual railway workwear, some wearing suits/business clothes, dunno what that was about, I kind of got the impression it was some kind of PR exercise or similar. It departed westwards along the Chuo line.

Then later at Omiya, a freight train was announced as passing through and it turned out to be an EF81 hauling a single Cassiopeia car sandwiched between that and another EF81.

The rear loco appeared to be under power as well. The internet speculates this was a driver training exercise.
