For those of you living in Japan, or any lucky individuals visiting Japan around the end of July, JR Tokai and JR East will be holding open house events at their Shinkansen maintenance depots in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka-ken and Sendai, Miyagi-ken respectively.  The Hamamatsu event will be held two days July 25/26, while the Sendai event is single day only, July 25.

Yes, but I haven't decided which one to go to yet.  I'm more of a Tokaido Shinkansen fan, but there may be a chance to see the new E5 set in Sendai (improbable, but who knows??).

Make sure to take tons of pictures of all the equipment they use and the maintenance depots themselves (as well as the trains of course ;))

Oh yes, I certainly will.  I am especially interested in seeing up close the bogies, traction motors, and maintenance equipment such as wheel turning devices.  I am told the lines to see the interiors of the driving cabs are horrendously long, so I may have to forgo that :-[
