Meitetsu 510/520

I came across an interesting website with articles on many of Meitetsu's older trains.

I didn't know that after being rebuilt for train operation in 1967, the 520s had two controllers on at least one end.  There is a photo of the two controllers side by side. One was for HL operation (when training with a 510) and the other controller was for stand-alone operation of the 520 car.

Another website with good photos of the Meitetsu 600 volt lines at Gifu. In one photo of 513 at the transfer station at Kurino it looks there were two train sheds, one behind the other on the shop tracks. This would explain the double crossover behind the front train shed which survived to the end of operation in 2005.

i'm working on a timeline and will post it later.  Leroy Demery, one of the authors of Electric Railways in Japan noted that Meitetsu lost Y1.7 billion annually (almost $17 million) on the tramway division and Y8 billion (almost $80 million) over the decade previous to the 2005 final closure.

Yes, there were two sheds at Kurono. The back one was for repairs and front one with pits was for running gear inspections.

What a neat little line!  Too bad it closed down, it looks like it would be great fun to ride.

OK,  that explains how Meitetsu managed to lash up the 510s and 520s in spite of the different switching circuitry...

The Ibi line was the last of Meitetsu's 600v railway lines. For years Ibi line rolling stock was a key component of Modemo's offerings with the 510s, 520s and 750s being offered numerous times between 2000 and 2012.

I gem of a video from 1988. It shows various terminals of the Meitetsu Gifu 600v red trains.  There is the single track Gifu eki-mae in front of JR Gifu, the Meitetsu Shin Gifu terminal with its joint 600v/1500v operation. An extended sequence shows the Ibi railway line terminal at Chutetsu with its high platforms for railway stock, low platforms for the city line trams and Ibi line express runs (510-520s and 770s). Scenes at Kurono show 522 scarlet along with 511 and a red & white 515.  As 522 and 515 were both scrapped in early fall 1988 this video must be spring or summer 1988.  The outer terminals of the shuttles to Hon-Ibi and Tanigumi are both shown.  There are lots of blue and white uniforms indicative of the robust school traffic on these lines. Looking closely a two-car 510 train leaving Kurono has an operator and a guard.

Another video. This is Ibi line shuttle beyond Kurono to Hon-Ibi.  It was 3.7km with four stations and all single track apart from the terminals. Through service to Gifu ended in 1984 and the shuttle was abolished in 2001. It could be a prototype for a small diorama.

Thank you for all the information about about the 510's - got a couple of Tomix HO 510's a while back and they are beautiful models.  Always great to learn the history of the models I have and have a better appreciation for them.
