This C58 was on static display in a park in Morioka City until autumn of last year.  It will pull the SL Ginga Tetsudou excursions once back in service.  Refurbished at Omiya like C61 20, it was originally built by Kawasaki in 1940.  In this video by tobu2181, you can see it running on the depot's test track.  Earlier discussion is here: http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/6610-jr-east-to-restore-c58-239

Only a year, JR East don't muck around do they? Maybe Union Pacific should ship 4014 over to them.

They really get her moving along that test track, she looks and sounds great. I wonder if a double header with 363 will be arranged?

Sorry West, I was not paying attention when you wrote this, and then I read about this on wikipedia in the last few days and posted about it.  I'm not very informed on domestic railroad happenings :grin

I know what you mean, these days I know more about what's going on with Japan's railways than Australia's.

An interesting feature on the restoration of C58-239, as well as her return to Morioka in late January this year:

She was presented to the public on the second of February:

All in all hats of to JR East (including their Morioka branch, and Ōmiya workshop) for doing such an amazing job!

Good that they took her back home for her public debut.

The fact that the same railway that has such trains as the E5 and E6 can also do this shows that companies don't have to forget their heritage.

Nice shot of the engineer in the snow and steam!

Cheers
