Hey guys,

Can you recommend locomotives that does double duties of hauling both freight and passenger cars? Maybe from 80's till now (if still applicable).

Yesterday, I received an EF30 and a DD51 which did double duties too ....... and would also like to get some recommendations to cars that they typically pull.

Thanks!

Other examples would be the EF64-1000, EF65, EF66 and EF81; at least until recently. Duties include sleeper services and special trains. Not sure how many 'ordinary' passenger services are still loco hauled, but you can pretty much bet that if there are, and it's electric hauled, it will be one of these classes.

DE10's, DD51's and DF50's of course too, just google them for pictures or look on youtube for examples or I can always try to find some for you. But note that DF50's were retired completely in the 80's, DE10's don't pull passenger trains since who knows when (they still pull some tourist trains though), and DD51's are the only diesel locos I know of that still scheduled pull passenger trains these days: namely the sleeper express trains Hokutosei, Twilight Express and Cassiopeia from Hakodate to Sapporo in Hokkaido.

Those sleeper trains are also pulled partly by the EF510-500 that VJM mentioned, these appear to be randomly used for either sleeper or freight train as you can see here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:JR_East_EF510-500

I don't really know well about electric locomotives, but these pages may give a bit more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Train_%28Japan%29 & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Japan_Railway_Company#Limited_express_.28overnight.29

@VJM - thanks! The EF510s completely slipped my mind.

@Claude - thanks as well! I knew those EF6's did double duties too but was unsure of the specific number. Either or all was unclear but glad to know that most did. Will search for those.

@Densha - saw some current videos of the DD51s, which prompted me to order. Its a great runner and I really enjoyed running it for the first time earlier. Will definitely check on those recommendations you gave.

Thanks guys - much appreciated!  :)
