Hi Westfalen

An excellent selection of photos from your latest rail  adventure.

How was the ToyokoInn at Otsuka?  I see it is on the Yamanote loop. Very Handy! Is there easy access to the station? Is it a safe area to wander around solo late at nite on your way back to the hotel? any nearby restaurants to the Hotel? ( I have wondered if it might be a good place to bunker down there for a few days rather than at Shinagawa station where I have stayed previously)

cheers.....Eisenbahn

Only a couple of minutes walk from the station entrance. A lot of restaurants and night clubs in the area but we found it safe at night. I picked it because we were arriving at from the north at Ueno and departing from Nippori.

I really like the diversity of your trip.

Something you don't often see are JR Central/West Shinkansen next to JR East's.

And what about those newspapers in the train?

Regarding "newspapers on the train", a couple of times in Japan I have been on local trains in a end carriage with a similar screened off section and they have been delivering mail and what looked like cash boxes to each local station. No security, just the train guard keeping an eye on it.

Wow, without security. Maybe the post compartments in old trains were intended for such use too. That train seemed like a Tokyo commuter train though, I wouldn't expect it such a place.

The newspapers were in a roped off section of the rear car of a Takasaki line train a Ueno. I saw the same thing on the Meitetsu in Nagoya last year but there the bundles of newspapers were just stacked inside the doorways of cars with the passengers.

Wow!

A true rail trip indeed Westfalen! I'm loving all the pictures! Thank you so much!

The newspapers in the train reminds me of the fish train, where i watched before on a documentory where there was a Kiha specially made to travel very early in the morning to send the freshly caught fishes to the city market... Cant remember the line nor the area though, but the ENTIRE train was packed FULL of fishes and all the fishermen helped out to load and unload the fish train so quickly! Of course they slept on the benches while the train chuck along..

Well, I'm back home again. When I got in the car to go and do some shopping the first thing I heard when I turned the radio on was "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" in Japanese!

Over the eight days I traveled 3451.7 km and took 1260 photos.

Here is a selection of photos from our last day.

Thanks to gmat for tipping me off to Doctor Yellow. We got some shots of it from the foot bridge at Tamachi, that place sure has changed since I was first there in 1990.

Good picture.  I see the bundles are labeled for Takasaki.  I saw similar bundles being loaded at Ise Nakagawa on the Kintetsu Nagoya/Osaka/Yamada Line. I like seeing these operations as they are in a manner the sole holdouts of the once extensive express parcel/mail service performed by the railways.
