I had to laugh when I saw this:

When I bought my C58 from HS they were about US$500.00. And I don't think they qualify as being "rare", either.

That's what, a 62% markup from Japanese domestic prices?  One thing about Ebay sellers with new items, do some price research before deciding to make the plunge, especially when they use descriptors like "rare".  Btw, C58's, as marknewton says, are still plentiful, at least in the better hobby shops (which I define as those who know HO scale exists).
