Baseball, Japanese and otherwise

The baseball season is approaching in Japan and elsewhere.  If you want to follow the action in Japan,  Nippon Professional Baseball has an English language web site.

http://www.npb.or.jp/eng/

There are two leagues, the Pacific League and the Central League, each of six teams.  The Hanshin Tigers and Seibu Lions are still railway owned teams.  As many as five of the 12 teams were railway owned about twenty years ago.  Generally teams are named for their corporate sponsors rather than the cities they represent. As in recent years, the Pacific League has already started play about 7-10 days before the Central League.

You will find a stadium guide here.   http://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/ballpark_guide.html

Pro Yakyu Now has information  and news on Asian baseball (not just Japan). Other than this web site I'm not aware of any English language box scores for Japanese baseball. Even here there are sometimes are box scores, but this depends on the time of volunteers.   http://www.japanesebaseball.com/index.gsp

I'm not aware of any English language fantasy leagues for Japanese baseball. Yahoo does have Fantasy Baseball leagues (this year with free live scoring) for Major League Baseball and there are now  numerous Japanese players in Major League Baseball.

I have a 7 x 7, head-to-head, auto draft (MLB) Yahoo Baseball Fantasy League that still has a couple of spaces left if anyone is interested.

League #: 194956

Password: draft

I will set the league to ready to draft Sunday night.

I didn't know they had Fantasy Baseball in Japan.

Being a long time NY Yankee fan....(wait for members to make comments)

when Matsui was playing for them, there was a whole section at the stadium filled with Japanese Press and fans.

From what I understand the Japanese press is now in CA where Matsui is playing for the Angels.

Taken from the visitors stands at Miyagi Stadium I see.  The JR East Senseki Line runs nearby, and serves this stadium at Miyaginohara Station.

I sometimes go to Sapporo Dome to see a Nippon Ham Fighters game, though it's always on invitation of my girlfriend, who's more of a fan than me.

We still have a huge Japanese following in Seattle for Ichiro (of course, the Mariners are owned by the Japanese founder of Nintendo I believe).  Really cool to go to a game and see ads in Japanese for the telecast back 'home'!
