New Limited Express Yakumo Train Designs Revealed

Recommended Posts

JR West have revealed design details of the new 273 series trains that will run on the limited express Yakumo service from spring 2024. The limited express Yakumo links the Sanyo and San’in regions of western Japan, running from Okayama Station in Okayama Prefecture to Yonago Station in Tottori Prefecture and Matsue Station and Izumoshi Station in Shimane Prefecture. The new 273 trains will replace the 381 series trains that have been operating on this route since 1982.

Well that's a lot more restrained than a lot of modern designs. Looks more like a sensible 'evolution' of JNR traditional design than a silly attempt to be radically new. However in this case the cab area looks more like a bread machine than a rice cooker. Panki densha?

The partitioned seating car looks like a great facility for people travelling in groups, something that's often not well accommodated by modern interior configurations. Four friends can cluster together around a table and two more across the aisle, and it'll be almost like a traditional private compartment for six, but with clear views to both sides instead of one. Large luggage space also good - lack of space to bring things with you is another constant issue with modern trains.

Even the livery is more constrained, appealing and sensible than a lot of modern expresses. I hope things continue more in this almost 'neo-kokutetsu' fashion through the Reiwa years and leave those flashy garish abominations of Heisei behind........

It's not a new design, just an evolution of the 271 and 287 series.

Funny this is making the news again now. These images had already been published last October.
