Feb. 13 saw the start of running using the newly undergrounded connection between Shin-Osaka and the Osaka loop line.  The underground platforms at Osaka Station will open next month, March 18. View from the front of ltd. express Kuroshio, section recorded Shin-Osaka to just past Tennoji.

There are a few videos of freights using this, with an EF210 at the end to push.  The grades do look steep.  Is that going to be a regular thing?

Video by Masaharu Aono.  Train (two actually 🙂 ) around 1:05.

Video by ayokoi, same route that Bikkuri included in his post, but with grades shown in permil.  Track diverges from old alignment around 3:10.

Wikipedia actually has a page listing some steep grades on adhesion lines (that is, without gear/rack to prevent wheel spin) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_steepest_gradients_on_adhesion_railways

YouTube member Arkibk Train Aki just posted two new videos of the opening of the new underground station platforms at JR West Osaka Station, which has been temporarily called Kita-Umeda by some people:

A walk around the new station:

A zenmen tenbō view of the new, extended Rapid service from this station all the way to Nara on the Osaka Higashi Line:

This new station will allow the Haruka airport express and Kuroshio limited express trains to stop at Osaka Station itself.

Nice vid - gives a great overview of the new station and extended platforms in the main station area. Lovely bit of new infrastructure for Osaka.

I presume all platforms in the underground section will eventually receive barriers, although the commuter platforms won't get those very fancy sliding doors, right?

Thanks Sacto, I'll check those out.  That uploader does some good work.

While reading about this, I came across information about the Naniwasuji Line, meant to be completed by 2031.  It'll diverge from this track underground and run south to JR Namba.  Right now that's the physical end of the Yamatoji Line (buffers, that is).  News to me.  The Wikipedia link below includes an illustration of the route, including the approximate approach to and orientation of the new Umekita platform.

Funny @miyakoji, I read the same article just the other day. Big piece of infrastructure - interesting that Hankyu may also be involved at some point. Although they've still got their hands full completeing the grade separated line around Awaji!

Freight run throughs the station, push pull on the Fukuyama Express and the Super Rail Cargo.  Rare to see freight passing through an underground station.

YouTube member tetsudoudaisukiman just posted a video of a freight train carrying Fukuyama Tranport containers through the new station:

Note the additional EF210 locomotive in the back. This is because the gradient in and out of the underground platforms are quite steep and freight trains need a banking (or as they're known as helper in the USA) locomotive to go through the station.
