I really miss the old SSL, the new ones feel very generic Tokyo commuter train.  The old Kiha66/67 series had so much rural JNR character!

Yes, the YC1s are based on the same designs as the 821 series which are gradually being rolled out across the network to replace the older 415 units . The YC1 are a bit squarer in shape then their electric counterparts, however.

Nice inside, designed to maximise the space inside the carriage, but do lack any character. Functionality over form.
