C62's in Hokkaido

Recommended Posts

It's well-known that C62-2 and C62-3 ended up on the Hokadate Main Line in Hokkaido in the early 1970's. Were there any other C62's also transferred there? Did the C62's receive the typical Hokkaido cold-weather modifications?

After looking through the C62 section of the D51498.com database (http://d51498.com/db/C62) , I can say with a high degree of certainty, that the following machines were based in one of the Hokkaidō engineering wards (Otaru and Naebō for the C62) throughout at least part of their career, though some only for a short amount of time:

C62-2 (1957~1971->1972 (sayōnara C62)

C62-3 (1956~1971 ->1972 (sayōnara C62)

C62-15 (1970~1971)

C62-16 (1970~1971)

C62-27 (1963~1968)

C62-30 (1960~1968)

C62-32 (1957~1971)

C62-42 (1957~1963)

C62-44 (1957~1971)

At least those are the one I could find. Most of the C62's that were still in service around the mid 1960's would be scrapped after they became surplus with the Tōkaidō Main Line and Jōban Line electrification progressing beyond their final vestiges of operation, with the majority being scrapped around 1967 or earlier.

Now regarding the modifications, apparently they did receive some kind of cold weather modifications (similar to the Jōban type?) however I wouldn't be able to list the actual modifications. Perhaps someone more familiar with the subject like @marknewton might be able to provide additional information on said modifications.

Cheers!

I'm sure that all got their second, small headlight there and for example C62-2 had a headlight fitted to its tender, which was absent when operation on the Tokaido line (at least going from Kato's models).

Hello 200系,

The cold weather modifications for C62s in Hokkaido included the following:

* Second sealed-beam headlight

* Additional heating coil and drain pipe in mechanical lubricators

* Hinged ashpan dampers that could be fully closed

* Rotating storm windows on cab front with protective screens

* High capacity steam heat supply valve

* Reduced size opening for shovelling plate in cab rear wall

* Tender headlight

Judging by photos I've seen, not all Hokkaido C62s carried all the modifications simultaneously. Also, some photos show that C6230, C6232 and C6244 carried a third marker light on the smokebox door above the number plate, circa 1967/68. A similar fitting appears on some Hokkaido C57s, C58s and D51s.

All the best,

Mark.

Hello Szdfan,

As someone modelling in 1/80th scale, I'm not familiar with the Kato C62 unfortunately. But at a guess I'd say the obvious features to add for a Hokkaido version would be the second headlight, the storm windows on the cab, and the tender headlight. I wonder if somebody makes aftermarket detail parts for Hokkaido engines?

All the best,

Mark.

if someone was to purchase the Kato C62, what kind of detail changes would be feasible to reflect the Hokkaido version?

Conveniently, Kato has offered not one but three versions of Hokkaido C62s.  Kato part 2017-1, 2017-2, and 2017-3 are late all Hokkaido type C62s.  While not currently in production they shouldn't be too hard to find on the used market.

I've been looking. I was just thinking of back up plans in case I'm not able to locate one.
