Modern Japanese Architecture

While I appreciate “traditional” Japanese architecture, I’m having a hard time getting my head wrapped around contemporary at architecture, which seems to be mostly featureless concrete blocks.

I’ve heard the suggestion the problem isn’t really Japanese architecture, but Japanese sprawl, in which there are so many buildings that it just overwhelms everything.

 

I’d like to model northern Hokkaido in the early 1970’s, but I’m having a hard time getting my mind around what it looked like.
