Train Café in Tokyo

JR East

Recommended Posts

That site is the first one which came up on an English search, looks very dated.

This is the restaurant's website: http://www.carmine.jp/carmine.html

I just realised I must have gone past it yesterday, albeit on a mission to acquire bread, which is also something which needs searching for if you want something beyond products based around shokupan.

Not quite the German bread culture in Japan, right? 😄

Not quite - there are a lot more "exotic" bakeries around than there used to be, though more French-influenced. Happily for myself Bäckerei Linde in Kichijoji is within my extended local shopping range :D.

Which bread culture? Not in the great East German Pampa. Around me, the only (real) bakeries are either run by French or by Danes (with French bakers). Only exception is a German baker that got taught in Denmark. The rest is frozen bread or bio “bakeries” which serve industrial quantities of bread to bio supermarkets. Quality: none.

London bread culture was pretty good when my girlfriend lived there. And good croissants. Nothing like those dry pieces of dough, Berlin bakeries sells as “croissant”.

I always loved those little German Brötchen. I've never been too impressed by the bread in the British Isles. I guess the grass is always greener.

Only metres away from CoCo curry as well... Guilty pleasure perhaps but honestly they are great!

Maybe you need to get out of Berlin 🙂

S. Germany has lots of good breads  -- various Brötchen, Brezel, various Bauern Bröte etc.  Definitely different than French bread culture I would guess (only been to France 2x and one of those was a long layover 😉  ).   And the Konditerei are also good with various pastries.

The breads in themselves are not that different. There are loads of dark, non-wheat, or mixed cereals breads in France. Most tourists/foreigners ignore them. The main difference in breads are the Brötchen and the pumpernickel on the German side, and the omnipresence of baguette and it’s derivatives in France.

I’m sure they are good breads in Germany, the issue around me is a lack of trained bakers. Of non-industrial scale production. Even the bio “bakeries”, which are advertise as real bakeries, are just sellers point. They sell bread that have dough that is too dense and which has not raised or been worked properly.

Baker is a hard life and even in France their numbers are declining. I don’t know how is the situation in the rest in Germany but Berlin is a desert.

Another good address I want to share with you (visited in Sept 2019) :

A real nice place to have a drink or a light meal. The bartender is really kind and appreciate to share ... even if we were obliged to use Google translate app to communicate. He offered me 2 postcards of JR Shinkansen Serie 0 and Dr Yellow

One great thing : you can ask for a particular train  (he's got a bueatiful collection) or come with your own trains !!!

Below some pictures to tease you

Next time I'm in Tokyo, I'll have a beer in that sympathetic 'Isakaya'

Enjoy,
