3D printer recommendation?

3D printing is something I want to get into at some stage. I'm not ready to plunge now. But the therapists at my work are thinking of getting into printing to make splints and things. The guy who runs the department is a friend of mine. I told him I'd ask for some recommendations. But I also have ulterior motives. I'd really like to be able to use the work printer to print off hobby things.

Anyone know of a printer or printer type that might be useful for making upper and lower extremity splints, and also be useful for tiny hobby purposes?

What price range are good hobby printers in, at this stage anyway?
