I need to replace the wheelsets ....or bogies on my Kato N Scale 117 . With no hope of being in Japan for sometime I'm wondering if I can get some parts to do it and if replacing the wheelsets is a viable  or easy fix....I'm plenty used to HO scale but I don't know about dismantling a nicely made Kato bogie.

What's the issue? The Kato EMU bogie design is pretty standardized and there are various parts available.

Appropriate wheelsets are:

- 29-950-1 (silver, gear, no traction tyre)

- 29-950-2 (silver, gear, with traction tyre)

- 29-950-5 (blackened, gear, no traction tyre)

- 29-950-6 (blackened, gear, with traction tyre)

Bogies can be (gently) pulled out of the chassis (remove body first):

Bogies can be dismantled by pushing the "tabs" poking up next to the copper conductor plate:

inwards and downwards with the aid some sort of tool (preferably not a flathead screwdriver etc. as it may scratch the plastic):

Dismantled it looks like this:

Wheelsets are a little fiddly to prise out and fit back in. If the worm gear falls out, be careful not to lose the little brass or plastic o-ring from one end (replacements are however available).
