JR 103 on Bantan Line

I am trying to find out when they started running the JR 103 on the Bantan Line. Wikipedia says "103 series EMUs (since 1998)", but is that correct? I interpret that as it started running in 1998? It sounds as a very "late start".

Yes, it's correct.

 

The 103-3500 Series began running on the Bantan Line right after it was electrified in 1998. Before that, services on the line were run by KiHa 40 diesel railcars.

 

What do you mean by "late start"?

Thanks for the response. I assumed (wrongly obviously) that the Bantan line was electrified much earlier due to the buildout of Shinkansen in the mid 70s, and because 103 had been around for a while. Trying to figure out what I can run with Shinkansen 0 series that connects from the Himeji station in the 70s.

I mixed up the electrification of the San'yō Main Line with the Bantam Line.

The Shinkansen are built to a different gauge and do not mix with other JR trains. The networks are fully segregated. The mini-Shinkansens run on re-gauged lines.

I was looking for rolling stock from the 70s that runs on line that has a connection from the Himeji station , and I thought the Bantan line was electrified when they built the elevated San'yō Shinkansen Line. I mixed it up with the San'yō Main Line where the electrification was finalized as part of opening the Shinkansen Line.

Indeed in the 1970s the only electrified line calling at Himeji station was indeed the San'yo Main Line. Other lines were all diesel operated.

 

If you aren't looking for any specific type of train, i'd say that a 113 Series in the Shonan orange-green livery (preferrably with the JNR-style large headlights) might be your best choice.


Other stock seen around Himeji at the time would be the EF58, EH10 and EF60 electric locomotives, and the 581, 485 (both bonnet- and flat-style front cars) 153 and 80 Serieses electric multiple units. For diesel services, KiHa 58, 80, 52 and 40s are a good choice, while diesel locomotives include the DD13 and DE10 classes. You might also be able to sneak in a bit of steam.
