Flushed with success after the completion of the Bulleid Pacifics I'm going to finish no less than three LNER A3 Pacifics in Z.

The most famous member of the class is 60103 'Flying Scotsman' arguably the most famous steam loco in the world and Atlas editions released it as their first model in their Z range This loco with issued with two Gresley teak coaches at an introductory price of £4.99 to get you hooked into the rest of the series.. Quite a nice model and easily motorisable.

Now I have had one running around on a Marklin chassis for a while alongside a cast white metal example done by Z-Club GB that fits the same chassis. The cast one was showing signs of paint wear after a fairly hard life at shows and the Atlas Apple green one was staring to bother me as not being the right configuration for the colour it was painted. Without going into too much detail as a double chimney one with no smoke deflectors it should only be British railways 'Brunswick' green.

The cast body one with its single chimney will become 60062 'Minoru'  . Seen here at Ranskill after having the Kylchap chimney fitted on the East Coast main line. This was a favourite family picnic spot in the summer as the LNER Pacifics served out their last few years on the Anglo Scottish expresses before diesalistion. My dad used this a favourite spot for his railway photography

The locos were nearly all named after famous racehorses (Doncaster Racecourse, venue for the St Leger race is only a short distance from the LNER's vast works in the town).

more tomorrow

The repainted Atlas will become one of the double chimney ones.  60066 'Merry Hampton' is seen at Doncaster station on a London bound express in August 1960. Note the teak bodied LNER coach just behind the loco, sadly by this time the gorgeous varnished teak would have been overpainted in BR Maroon

In real life we British railfans have a bit of a Love-Hate relationship with this pampered show pony which has cost its previous owners and now the National Railway Museum huge amounts of money. The staggering amount of money wasted to get it back out on the main line beggars belief and I understand from friends in the know that its reduced haulage capacity and only being allowed to run at reduced speeds means it will never make a profit on railtours

Now I have another un-modified Atlas one still in LNER Green which I'm tempted to fit a single chimney to it, leave it in Apple green and maybe, just maybe model it in the condition it came back from its Australian tour in.

Seen at Tapton Junction in Chesterfield (which my next Z layout will be based on)  in April 1990

Knowing we had time we all jumped into my Ford Granada Scorpio and blasted off into the hills to catch it again

Seen just after coming out of the notorious Totley Tunnel. proper old school shot

Seen at Grindleford in Derbyshire going very, very slowly. It was heading back to Steamtown in Carnforth but British Rail had increased the superelevation of the track to suit the newly introduced Class 158 DMUs and there were very serious doubts about whether it would fit under the roadbridge

So, Another Marklin Bay S3/6 chassis ready for surgery surrounded by bodyshells,

like the Bulleid Pacifics paint sequence is Hycote grey primer, Hycote Brooklands green. Black is Tamiya flat Black. One coat of Hycote clear lacquer before decals are applied. Lining, numbers and BR Crests are from the N Gauge Fox transfers range as are the etched nameplates and smokebox number plates

60066 on a Bradford-London Kings Cross express with a rake of LNER Gresley teak coaches

60062 on the same train. The Gresley coaches are just as they came out of the Atlas box except for the fitting of Marklin Coach bogies and the addition of some extra weight.

The eagle eyed among you will spot this scene is the backside of my 'Hakuho' layout still under development!

All of the 1950's and 60's cars are from the A2 range

Merry Hampton on the 'Master Cutler' Sheffield to London Pulman express. Minoru on a normal express. 4472 Flying Scotsman in the yard along with a newly painted BR Green class 37 and the WD 2-10-0

Scotsman is mounted on a Marklin Bay S3/6 chassis that gives you the green wheel centres. Tender still has the original Atlas chassis that needs swapping for a Marklin one. The lettering and numbering will be overlettered with proper gold ones and proper nameplates as well

Kind of a shame using the S3/6, because those are lovely locomotives as well, especially in the old K.Bay.Sts.B livery.

I Know. It is a shame but I'm quite ruthless like that.

And I keep looking at the BR38 (P8 4-6-0) and plot what to do with that as well.

one thing I am on with is converting a BR 86 2--8-2T chassis. This burnt its motor out big time at a show  a few years ago and has been in the 'Sin-bin' ever since. I've milled a motor mount to fit a coreless motor where the Marklin motor fitted

This is the plan, A Great Western Railway 2-8-2T that worked the South Wales valleys coal traffic. I'll have to pack a big coal load in the bunker to hide the motor though and take a lot off the top of the cylinders to get the body low enough

just a little postscript

I was taliking to our Brooklyn ( nearly 8 ) this afternoon as we are planning a trip to Kirkby Stephen on Friday to chase the loco hauled passenger trains on the Settle to Carlisle. he is definetlly following in my footsteps with his interest in trains and also has followed most of my threads on the forums. He has got a bit of an obseesion with 46115 Scots Guardsman at the moment tbut is intererested in Scotsman as well so I showed him these two pictures

My first encounter aged 4 years 10 months on an Ian Allen Locospotters special from Doncaster to London Marylebone at Hexthorpe Junction. dad took the picture OBSV

Well... I've started looking at videos again to see what kinda coaches I would need for 2 or 3 sets.. Flying Scotsman is obviously something I'll want, as well as an A4 (Brunswick green probably), and a Britannia class (also Brunswick green). Really love the spoked wheels on these things.

It'll be something for future reference though, I really need to not buy anything new now (I still have several Dutch locomotives on my list as well... )
