You spent less time painting the whole loco than I do just priming my H0j Hokutan 😄

 

Really nice seeing the thing coming together, and how much work's been spent on all the various parts and everything. Really impressive work, would love to have the tools to do something similar, but then in H0. Guess I'll stick with kits for now though 😉

Glazing added, snifter valves mesh fitted, Vac pipes on (They are flexible and you can couple a train up with them) and representative firewood load added to tender.

Kev, that's a beautiful loco you've built, you've done a brilliant job on it. The C56s are one of my favourite JNR steam locos, and the Thai versions look great in their livery. Please post your progress on the Austerity tank, I'm sure that will be a lovely model as well.

It probably wasn't common in Europe, but I've seen many locos in warmer climates with white or silver paint on the cab roofs where they were metal. Some US railroads painted the cab roofs in a bright oxide red, which looks rather lairy. As Kev says, it was to reflect the sun's heat. But from my own experience I don't think it made much difference. 🙂

Probably did somewhat, as long as you've got no fire roaring in the firebox 😄

I think it also helped with them burning wood rather than coal. The ash is a lot 'friendlier'

 

Interestingly, a few years ago, I was privileged to drive a cement train from Khon Kaen up to the Laos border (under supervision of course) The loco cab air condtioning was on full with all the doors and windows wide open including the engine bay door. When I tried to explain that the air conditioning was designed to work with them shut they looked at me as if i was an idiot!

 

The Alsthom ALS Co-Co was well battered but pulled well

If memory serves me correct I think some of the early diesels like the Davenport Co-Cos and Bo-Bos had white roofs

postscript.

 

Taken outside in the front garden in this glorious weather we are having

So the four pieces of Thai rolling stock I had built were complete apart from the lettering and weathering so it made sense to finish these off as well

 

An S.W Salt wagon and one of the tousands of G.G vans. By rights the S.W should be even rustier than this as everyone I photographed was pretty rotten

Two C.F container flats. I think even when I was out there they had all been pretty much replaced by bogie ones

Just found out from Andrew Burnham, the editor of Continental Modeller magazine, that they are running a six page article about the model in the October issue
