The oldest currently existing Japanese private (i.e.free enterprise for profit) railway is the Nankai Electric Railway, which was established in 1885 as its predecessor Hankai Railway. This was two years before the appearance of electric trolleys in Southern California, and 16 years before the establishment of the Pacific Electric.  Just imagine if the PE had held on and existed as long as Nankai has...

The Nankai is the last of the Meiji-era private mainline railways. It only escaped nationalization because the Diet failed to agree on the terms of the act.
