¿Como se dice "choo choo"?

Recommended Posts

My google-fu has come up short on this, what is the Japanese onomatopoetic sound equivalent for "choo choo"?  is it just "chû-chû" チューチュー?

I've come across "gatan-gaton" ガタンガトン for "clickety-clack", and "kishapoppo" 汽車ポッポ as the child's word equivalent for "choo choo train".

Enquiring minds want to know the appropriate sounds to make when playing with Japanese trains.

Cat,

How about 'chiu chiu', that's o.k. in hiragana and katakana, and gives the approximate sound?

Or, as an alternative 'pafu, pafu' ,'puff, puff'?

Regards,

Bill,

Melbourne.

Railsquid pretty much sums it up.  "Shupopo" would be it, though I reckon most children would not imitate a train in that manner, but rather (older) adults who have a memory of working steam.  Since electric trains (emus) and using trains is so much an ingrained part of daily life in urban/suburban Japan, the general term (outside of Hokkaido) for a train is "densha", even if it is a diesel.  So most children or their accompanying parents would elicit a cry of "densha da!" upon seeing one.
