You got it rail squid 🙂 NEX is the only train that doesn't operate in the Kansai area. Thats my thing Kansai Trains. My favourite currently is the Hanshin 5700 jet silver. Thanks for playing.

A few lineups related to the Shinkansen part of my collection. Considering the sheer number of cars and formations, I'm both very proud, and deeply disturbed by the result...

A lot less text than usual for me, especially considering the subject matter, but I let the pictures speak for themselves.

@serotta1972,

I take it you're referring to the 800系 and E6系, right (as I can't think of any other red ones, with exception of the E2系 N formations (E2系0番台) which features in one the pictures, or the early (pre-2002 extension to 10 car formations) E2系0番台 J formations)?

My collection is mainly centered around the older shinkansen types, which in this case refers to the 0系 and 100系 for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, and the 200系 for the Tōhoku/Jōetsu Shinkansen. That isn't to say that I don't like the later series, I absolutely do (even though some are a bit of an acquired taste), love them even, it just means my main focus remains on those three series.

A such I try to limit myself to the types which were in service when either of these series were still in active duty, unless there is some emotional connection, or I simply really like a new(er) series.

For Tōkaidō Shinkansen formations this means I use September 1999/2003 respectively (the final month of 0系/100系 operations) as a soft cutoff point. While November (final scheduled 0系 service)/December 2008 (final run) serves the same purpose for the Sanyō Shinkansen formations in my collection (March/April 2013 for the JR East shinkansen).

In general I can divide the shinkansen part of my collection into the following themes, Tōkaidō/Sanyō Shinkansen 1964/1972/1975~1999/2008 and Tōhoku/Jōetsu Shinkansen 1982~2011/2013, with the following focus points (with the 0系/200系/100系 providing the anchor point for each focus point):

-Tōkaidō/Sanyō Shinkansen 1972~early 1980's (maturing of the shinkansen, re-organization of the 0系 formations as well as the introduction of new formation compositions, the introduction of the 0系1000番台(1976) and later 2000番台(1981) but also the retirement of the first production batches. The appearance of mixed formations (sub-types batches) made this period interesting to me as well).

-Tōkaidō Shinkansen ~1989~1999 (the introduction of a lot of new series, while simultaneously the slow but steady disappearance of the remaining (Tōkaidō Shinkansen) 0系 formations, as well as the commencement of the retirement of the oldest 100系 formations.

-Sanyō Shinkansen ~1989~2008 (more or less the same reasons as above, with the continued existence of the 0系 remaining the main drive).

-Tōhoku/Jōetsu Shinkansen, ~1995~2007 (A lot of variation, JR East introducing a metric ton in terms of new series (5 between 1992 and 1997, excluding sub-series), lots of different 200系 formations still in service, the renewal of part of the 200系 K formations and the retirement of the non renewed formations among other reasons, I also happen to really like the JR East shinkansen colors used in this era).

-Tōhoku/Jōetsu Shinkansen ~2011, simply because my first trip to Japan happened in May/June of that year, also the 200系 K formations were still in service on the Tōhoku shinkansen at that point in time.

As such, when the 800系 entered service in 2004 there were certainly still enough 0系 formations left in service to warrant a place in my collection, however as the Kyūshū Shinkansen extension to Hakata wouldn't open until March 2011, it places the 800系 somewhat  outside of my intended era (though I can remedy this by using the 100系 retirement date as a cutoff point instead).

It also doesn't help that I'm not that big of a JR Kyūshū fan, and that I'm not overly fond of the 800系 design either, though I'm slowly warming up to it as It's getting older.

That said I do have the Kato version, low key, on my wishlist, so whenever they decide to re-release it I might actually snap one up.

As for the E6系,  it entered service a day after the 200系 retired from active service, and the design simply never appealed to me. Over time I learned to appreciate the E5系 to the point I actually decided to buy the Kato model (originally I had intended the E4系 to be the cutoff point), however this hasn't happened with regards to the E6系 (yet). Also, I've never really been a big fan of the mini-shinkansen series, with the exception of the 400系 and to a lesser extend the E3系0番台, which makes the decision of not getting a model of one a little easier as well.

Anyway the tldr version, as the 0系, 200系 and 100系 have always been my most beloved Japanese trains (and by extension worldwide, ever), I center my collection around these series, hence the 800系 and E6系 wouldn't really fit in well.

Ah, got it. I was actually thinking along those lines and share similar sentiments about the 800, E6 and E5 and it wasn't until I saw the E5 and E6 in person and ridden them that I appreciated their unique design.  Thank you for elaborating and you most certainly have a beautiful collection of Shinkansens.

Gosh, this lineup is amazing. very realistic to have so many similar trains.

I have always avoided collecting Shinkansen but you are giving me a serious hitch. I always had a thing for the 200系 and 300系.

keep calm and brake :sad4: , shinkansen-ite is hard to cure, after collecting all that's been released in 40 years, the next step is start to "cut & paste" old junk to obtain the prototype not yet released (or in alternative, the bankrupcy.........the Endo 200 is still missing but it's time to close the file)

p.s. finally someone crazy like me 🀪

Hello 200ç³»,

Is the E1系 a Kato or Tomix?  I've got 2 x Tomix E1系 full consist, with a few spare cars and a spare motor car.

It's Tomix. KATO version is kind of crap anyway.

To continue the line ups, here is my (almost up to date) line up of B-Trains. Almost all of the commuters, the 500, the Hokkutosei & Cassiopeia are motorized. Also slowly I am equipping them all with better pantographs. ...but there is soo many of them. Lot of work.

Shinkansen, sleepers and freight

My full scale line up would look pretty unimpressive though as I downsized A LOT (only 200renewed, 700Nozomi and 253 left) due to space and economic issues and the lack of opportunities to actually run them.

@Ochanomizu san,

Sorry for the late reaction.

The E1系 set pictured is Tomix 98982, the 2018 limited edition (full 12 car formation in one set). I also own 98903, the "Toki no hina tanjō" edition, but that's unfortunately the only set in my entire collection where I wasn't able to source the extension set when I purchased it, 7 years ago. I had hoped Tomix would re-release it somewhere in the future, but with the way they are focusing on re-issuing everything their older releases with the new M13 motor, I'm not confident I'll ever see the extension set released in it's current form (and I have (had) too many outstanding pre-orders to actively hunt for a second hand example)...

I've stayed away from the Kato version because of the inability to recreate a complete formation, not to mention they haven't released it in a very long time. A bit of a shame if you ask me, as the Kato E4系 for example, in my opinion, has a much more elegant solution for the drive system compared to the Tomix E1系 (which just results in a massive grey block obscuring the lower floors of both motor cars), though I'm not sure if Kato's E1系 uses the same system.

Hope that answers your question🙂

My deepest apologies for setting you on a dangerous, and quite expensive, path. Though as a priest of the Shinkansen-Kami sama shrine, you are always welcome to offer a prayer to the kami, just make sure to offer some 'odango' instead of the usual coin offering😉

But seriously, I currently own about 138 full formations, ranging from mid to late Shōwa era 'getaden' ((pre)war/immediate post war era JNR emu types) to full length Kantō area commuter/suburban EMU formations (and everything in between), and still, nothing beats the enjoyment I get when running my shinkansen. To me there will be always just something special about them, though considering the real deal holds a very special place in my heart, I don't think I'm totally unbiased with regards to the shinkansen, so your mileage may vary.

Great choice with regards to the 200系 (obviously) and 300系, I've been wanting to expand my 300系 (unfortunately I missed out on the 2019 release of their updated F formation, because I already had the E1系 set on pre-order) and I'm still  hoping for Tomix to eventually release a J or F formation (based on their current model) with the original cross frame pantograph/pantograph cover combo.

Thanks for all the positive responses everyone, I really appreciate it.

It definitely is.

The TGV Sud-Est has a very special place in my heart.

I took it numerous times to visit my family in the late in the 80s and early 90s. I can still remember how impressed I was every time a consist would pass through the curved road-crossing near my grand-parents’ house. Slow, noisy and so majestic.

If Kato do indeed re-release a TGV Orange next year, I will for sure bite the bullet (train) and order one set. Maybe it will find company next to a 200 Series.

Something different this time,

First a modest Heisei era Chūō East/Chūō Sōbu line commuter/ltd express lineup.

The focus this time around, is mainly around the Tōkyō portion of the line, as well as 183系/189系 formations still in service from the late 1990's onward.

As well as something a bit more contemporary,

Part of my JR West Kansai area collection (Kyōto focus):

^Thanks, I had a sneaking suspicion that might be right up your alley😄

Anyway, while I was originally intending to switch from the Chūō East, to the the Sōbu/Sōbu Yokosuka/Tōsai line, I ended up going for another family re-union...

209ç³» family portrait (at least up till the E231ç³»):

DSC_0005

Right to left:

Keihin-Tōhoku/Negishi line 209系0番台 (Tomix (latest release) 10 car formation)

Rinkai line 70-000圢 (Tomix, 10 car formation)

Shōnan-Shinjuku/Tōkaidō Line E231系1000/8000番台 (Kato, 10+5 (15) car formation)

Chūō-Sōbu line E231系0番台 (Kato, 10 car formation)

Chūō-Sōbu line 209ç³»500番台 (Kato, C501~509 subgroup (PS28圢) 10 car formation)

Chūō-Sōbu line E231系0番台 (Tomix, 10 car formation)

Jōban/Ueno-Tōkyō line E231系0番台 (Kato, 10+5 (15) car formation)

Yokosuka line E217ç³» (Kato, post 2008~2012 renewal, 11 car formation)

Still missing a E231系500番台 (on Nov pre-order (Tomix), so that shouldn't be an issue for too long) and E531系 (on my wish-list) to complete the family. I'm not that big of a fan of the E233系 and following series, so I guess I'm not really in a rush to complete the set post the final E231系 variants. Though if I want to keep to a mid-Heisei theme I'll eventually need something like an E233系0番台/1000番台 to keep the others company.

@200系 ,

Seeing your JR East Shinkansen fleet and especially the TOMIX E1ç³» 2018 limited edition just makes me kick myself more for missing out on that set when I saw it in Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara! I didn't end up picking it up because I was already loaded down with trains.... But I should have bought it and shoehorned it into my suitcase for the flight back to China! It would have been right at home with the rest of the train stuff I already had in my luggage!

I agree about Kato's solution for the E4ç³» mechanism, it certainly does look better than TOMIX just dumping the chassis block into the lower deck!

I am glad that they didn't motorise the bi-level trailers on the 200ç³» H set!

Something I've wanted to do for a while, but never really got around actually doing:

DSC_0179DSC_0182

J.N.R. era Tōkaidō shinkansen formations, from left to right:

- 1000 type formation A (June 1962 ~ March 1964)

- H (Hitachi) formation, H26, October 1st 1964 ~ 1965

- K (1972 Kodama revision) formation, 1972~1980

- H formation (1974 Hikari revision), 1974 ~ 1978

- N formation (N97 ~ N99 sub-group, the only full 0 series 1000 sub-type formations) 1976 ~ 1979/1992

- K formation, K30, 1972 ~ 1976

- Nh formation (post 1976 Hikari revision), 1981 ~ 1987 (Kato model, unfortunately not prototypical in terms of the sub-types used however the composition of the formation is fortunately accurate)

- 922 type 0 sub-type formation T1, former 1000 type formation B. 1964, prior to remodeling.
