Never even knew the trains had compatible couplers. A very interesting sight.

Yup, no problem at all.

The ICEs use the most common type of Scharfenberg coupler with the electric connectors on both sides.

 

It's still funny seeing an ICE being pulled by another EMU.

The VIRM has the connectors on top. There is however a coupling mode that not engages the electrical connectors, just the main coupler and the two air lines inside. This allows towing without electrical compatibility. Also comes handy for with coupler adapters.

Pretty much all rolling stock in the Netherlands since the 1960s has the same type of Scharfenberg coupler, as do many other trains in neighbouring countries. As kvp already pointed out, most trains can only couple together mechanically, but not electrically. So it's mostly only useful for towing.
