No real railroad would use a selector plate to move trains between tracks, that's only found in OO shelf layouts!

There's one in Boulogne sur Mer in France, long enough to handle large locos. It was originally at the far end of the Gare Maritime and took the place of a point and headshunt. The station and track are gone, but the sector plate is still there on satellite photos.

A selection of BR stock made it to Hamburg in 1988:

And a class 156 DMU went to the Netherlands in 1989:

This photo from the Hamburg link is particularly interesting:

Shows the DB shunter and a DB e-lok in the background with the british locomotive.

I want to see the train that they need that much power lol 😃

That was the train... all destined for scrap.

It's definitely the most impressive "train" I ever saw. Would be quite expensive to reproduce. How many locs? Anyone kept a count?

28 total:

1x MEG (ex-DB) Br 252

26x DB Br 143

1x MEG diesel shunter (ex-DR)

They've outlived the country which built them by thirty years.

I do hope at least one 143 is going to a museum? They seem to have been reliable enough, judging by their length of service.

There will probably be a lot of them that are getting sold to third party railways and I can imagine a few will also be preserved.

EDIT: I just checked, tons of them are already owned by third party railways, so expect them to be around for another 30-40 years at least 😄

I could offer at least the 252 to such a string 🙂.   The Arnold is my only Amazon Europe (.de in this case) and with a coupon I had was dirt cheap.  Being a cheap China made locomotive it was also “ cheap” in construction and would not work with a decoder plugged into the socket.  I eventually was able to get it to work with some direct wiring.

in any case, that is all I would have to offer to an attempt to recreate this, though mine I believe is DR liveried, not MEG.

Quite amazing scenery though.

And still looking better than anything going on with ex. DB coaches in current-day Albania

Trigger warning! Disturbing images

Keep in mind that Albania received those coaches AFTER the war.

Albania makes for a cool budget layout theme though. Just buy a bunch of old DB, ÖBB or FS junk coaches that fell off people's layouts and you're good to go.

Speaking of Albania... how about a German V200 Pulling Chinese Passenger Rolling Stock?

One of these days I'm gonna collect cheap European coaches for the express purpose of modelling a train like that. Make it as run down as possible.

And then put a Penn Central logo on the side...

Funny it really gives he effect is a model train, just does not feel right as being at scale! Again minds eye relying on visual memories and saying tilt.
