According to Wikipedia, " The opening sequence with the three gunmen meeting the train was the last sequence filmed in Spain. Shooting at Cattle Corner Station, as the location was called in the story, was scheduled for four days and was filmed along the railway line near Estación de Calahorra, outside Guadix, Spain."

Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns--gotta love em! minimalist filmed in Spain and Italy usually and all about the framing and detail action rather than speeding trains. Push in pull out. Simple drama of the train pulling in, expectation then surprise arrival. Train just sets the scene so nicely. Great sweaty, grimy faces! Love those films.
