Hi

I am a model "railroader" from France. I have the luck to be part of a model club.

As I've finished my US Project in N, I'd like to attack another project : a japanese layout.

To convince my club I am looking reference for N locomtive very original (except shinkansen) for his design or even tramway. (All time as the goal is to open others from model from France)

I'll work with young teenagers

Another question, for a shinkansen do you know the minimum radius for turn?

Thanks a lot

here's a WIP of my work. As I am waiting figures to finish it I don't have any recent pictures

Is there any particular time or era you would prefer to model?  Modern or otherwise?

When you say "very original (except shinkansen)" do you mean in design?

If design original to Japan..

I linked from HobbySearch as they have a great product list.  However, many of my links are 'sold out' there.

http://www.modeltrainplus.net/ is a great source for purchasing.

They will also do 'personal shopping' for you if you have something specific you are looking to find but it sold out online.

I hope this helps.  There is a lot available for Japanese N.  If you have more questions, just ask.  Someone here will be able to answer them for you!

Bruno,

Welcome, glad you found the forum! I think you will find Japanese trains are were you can find just about anything you may dream up in train design that is actually running. Krackel hopper got you going here with a start on the different directions you can go and I think you will find if you look thru hobby search's site to see the great variety of trains and there are a lot of them modeled!

cheers

Hello Mr Bruno,

Firstly I suggest you consider the scene.  Here are several references that might be of interest:

Hakone Tozan Line

Enoden Electric Railway

Odakyu Limited Express joins Tokyo to both Hakone and Enoshima.

Yufuin-no-mori in Kyushu to the south.  Please consider some of the other trains featured on this website.

Each of the above will tie in with some of the shinkansen, most notably the N700, 700, and N700A series.

Good luck.

Welcome! Most of your queries are answered from our friends above, & the min radius of Shinkansen to pass nicely at full speed is R315 (recommended by manufacturer), though they have been tried at R280 without much problems.

Have fun & looking forward to ur pictures!

Do you think If I use a radius of R315 at full speed there won't be any trouble?

My son love to drive very fastly

Bruno,

315 is around the minimum comfortable radius for shinkansens. they like it a bit larger, but should run ok, but the faster you want to go the larger the radius you will need w/o things going off the tracks!

they will look very funny going around 315 radius curves, they even look a bit klunky around the larger radius curves as the ends stick out so much.

judging from the pict of your other layout there, i think you will find it easy to do japanese small layouts like that with a lot more things in them. the cool thing about japan is trains go right buy (and even thru or under!) just about everything, at times extremely close! scenes in japan also can change in a heartbeat and there is not as much city planning and zoning in japan so you can have all sorts of building pushed right up next to each other. this means in a small layout you can cram in a lot of variety in structures and scenes and have a lot of fun with it!

You are in trouble if you loved those models above, there are scads more like those with a lot of variations to boot! If you like anime there are dozens of trains and trams painted with anime characters. designs run the gambit from a box to the jules verne rapit (the blue sub looking one above). there are hundreds of these modeled, it can really break your bank account!

cheers

Do you know if we can find alternate models like steampunk version or futurist version of model?

Especially considering that it's all paper and cardboard, save for track and trains.

Since the sub needs to submerge to get out, I just hope the water is deep enough ;-)

Or - maybe those sharp fins cut through the track if necessary.

It's not uncommon to see ships in impossible "harbors" on layouts, or large trucks in dead-end locations where there's no room for them to turn around.

I see plenty of cars parked in spaces where you wonder how they got in there. Mind you that real life here...

The MicroAce A7890 Kiha 72 Yufuin no Mori is very hard to find unless you are prepared to pay for it at double the original price.  However the MicroAce A2162 Kiha 71 Yufuin no Mori pops up on yahoo auctions every now and then.  I just got one for 7,750 yen.  The later is a 10 year old model, but hopefully you can find a well looked after set.
