JR East train-mounted catenary and track sensors

Ukiyo over on the SSC forum posted this interesting article:

TOKYO -- JR East, the main railway operator in eastern Japan, will use big-data analysis to unearth troubles with rails and aerial wiring more quickly, with the aim of reducing the need to delay or suspend service.

     High-precision sensors and cameras mounted on trains the company runs will collect enormous amounts of information while the trains are in operation, such as checking for rail deformation or detecting missing bolts that anchor rails and ties.
