  1. JR East promoting travel by train to the Tohoku region this autumn/winter, aimed at millennials, song is "RPG" by Sekai no Owari. Good sound editing including clickety clack and signature shinkansen aerodynamic whine at speed. 30 second spot: Extended 90 sec. spot:
  2. This came up on JR East's own YouTube channel: On the 10th and 11th of October 2020, JR East operated this train as part of a day-trip package from Akita station out to Oga, where one can enjoy some natural hot springs and various other attractions. Leaving Akita at 9:50 and arriving at Oga station at 10:44, passengers would transfer to a chartered bus to go on one of two different routes. Both include lunch and a dip in a hot spring. The return train journey departed Oga at 4:06 PM and ended at Akita at 5:01. All fine and good, but the rail portion of the trip should be longer 😁 Railfan highlights DE10 1759 was built by Nippon Sharyo and delivered to Akita Loco Depot on July 7, 1977 and has been in the Akita area throughout its life. 603 12 series coaches were built between 1969 and 1978. Upon the privatization of JNR, JR East got 219, second only to JR West which got 250. JR Shikoku only got 10. A total of 601 were transferred to the new JR companies after 2 were scrapped in 1986. Around the 6 minute mark in the video, the train passes one of the EV-E801 sets at Wakimoto Station. At the other end of the train is DE10 1187, built by Kawasaki and delivered to Yamagata Depot on August 25, 1972. It would be based in Yamagata until 1990 when it was transferred to Akita. Observe operations at 15:45 in the video.
  3. On their 30th anniversary, Abukuma Express has announced the new AB900 series. The AB900 series will be based off the JR East 721 series, and will replace the old Abukuma Express 8100 series. The AB900 series will come in five different liveries.
  4. By youtuber Kiyu, whose earlier video JR500 posted a few months ago, here's a new video on the Tohoku Shinkansen of the videographer eating an ekiben at each station that has a vendor within the fare gates. Great stuff
  5. JR East's new battery electric multiple unit model on its way from Hitachi's Kasado factory to JRE territory. I wonder if JR Kyushu owns any rights to that carbody design. No good YT vids of it stopped anywhere yet. by Masaharu Aono by KENKENKAICHO by yuuya0381 at Okayama, lots of cabinets (batteries?) under the blue car by cookie 99 at Shin-Kurashiki, viewing the opposite side as the video above. I thought the red car would have those cabinets on this side, but no.
  6. Another JR East hybrid DMU emerges, looks like the same body as the E129: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HB-E210_C1_C2_Zushi_20150113.JPG http://railf.jp/news/2015/01/17/171000.html
  7. Posted by Dave Fossett on the jtrains list, Tetsudou Fan is carrying this also: new fleet livery: http://railf.jp/news/2014/03/04/171500.html "Toreiyu" excursion train: http://railf.jp/news/2014/03/04/173000.html pdf on JR East's site with diagram of excursion train's modified Japanese style interior: http://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2013/20140303.pdf All regular services trains will have the new livery by the end of 2016, and the single 6-car Toreiyu set is to be in service by the end of July.
  8. I often think about long-haul rides on conventional lines. In particular, Aomori to Kyoto and Kyoto to Shimonoseki on the lines on the Sea of Japan. I've done most but not all of the Kyoto-to-Shimonoseki half in separate runs, but none of the northeastern part. Have any of you? The parts of the San'in that I've traveled, I think were almost all worth doing by local train. What about the Tohoku/Hokuriku region? But it looks like a much longer distance, possibly double. I wonder if I'd be tempted to pay out for a limited express ticket
  9. For anyone interested in modelling rural northern Honshu, this is a must see. I recommend it for everyone else as well :). This is a 3-video series by YT uploader karibajct. JR East's hybrid HB-E300 trains entered into service in October 2010 in two general locations: Aomori and Yamagata in far northwestern Honshu, and Nagano, Yamanashi, and Niigata, the Koshinetsu region roughly in northern central Honshu. There are only 10 cars in 4 trainsets, three 2-car sets and one 4-car set. In these videos we see a 2-car Resort Asunaro set on the Resort Asunaro Tappi service. Starting at Shin-Aomori, the train goes to Aomori and then reverses to take the Tsugaru Line (not the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line) to Mimmaya. Karibajct made these recordings on April 13, 2013, and there's still snow on the ground in some places. Shin-Aomori to Shin-Aburakawa - 8:50 arrives at Aomori, 14:10 passes Aomori Depot, there are some E751 intermediate cars and some Kanto-area rolling stock stored here. Shin-Aburakawa junction to Kanita - some Tsugaru Shamisen around 13:50 Kanita to Mimmura - the Tsugaru and Tsugaru Kaikyo lines split at Shin-Nakaoguni junction at 7:45, and the Hokkaido Shinkansen is under construction at 10:10. Lonely, lonely Mimmura Station is at 33:55. 10. JR East's factory at Niitsu has turned out a green car for use with the SL Ban'etsu Monogatari steam excursion. Its first run will be this Saturday April 6. It is based on SUHAFU 12-102. They've also got a pdf available http://www.jrniigata.co.jp/press/20130124sl4-9-g.pdf with some artist's renderings of the interior. I'm looking forward to some photos and video of the real thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Banetsu_Monogatari_SuRoFu_12_102_Niigata_20130406.jpg
