  1. EF510-509 has been transferred from JR East's Tabata Depot to JR Freight's Toyama Locomotive Depot. -509 is one of the two EF510-500s, along with -510, in the Casseiopia livery. It doesn't look like English or Japanese Wikipedia is updated yet, does anyone know if JR East has sold this one to JR Freight? I'm still a bit surprised that JRE bought all of those locomotives only to sell them on just a few years later. Or was that the plan to begin with? I'm just not sure what their reason would be for subsidizing JR Freight's fleet. It will be the tenth EF510-500 transfered if that's the case. I think -509 and -510 are two of the sharpest looking electric locomotives ever built. http://railf.jp/news/2015/01/19/170000.html
  2. Visitors to Toyama might like to know where the 2011 movie Railways-2 was filmed. It is set on the local Chitetsu lines, which run at the foot of Toyama's splendid mountains. The film offers some particularly beautiful shots, including this one of Tsukioka station and the Tateyama range behind. It shows the Tateyama Line and Kamidaki Line climbing some way into the hills. Several scenes take place at Dentetsu Kurobe: And at Inarimachi station and yard: (There seems to be a limit on the number of photos I can include, so I'll continue in the next post.)
  3. I often think about long-haul rides on conventional lines. In particular, Aomori to Kyoto and Kyoto to Shimonoseki on the lines on the Sea of Japan. I've done most but not all of the Kyoto-to-Shimonoseki half in separate runs, but none of the northeastern part. Have any of you? The parts of the San'in that I've traveled, I think were almost all worth doing by local train. What about the Tohoku/Hokuriku region? But it looks like a much longer distance, possibly double. I wonder if I'd be tempted to pay out for a limited express ticket
