  1. Well, I am nearly finished rebuilding my layout. Say Hola to Ciudad de Gloria, a modern metropolis boasting a subway system with a new railcar fleet and a snazzy and clean commuter railroad. The city is named for my late Mom. The Mayor and the City Council stress safety and passenger comfort over speed and profit. In fact, the railroad's motto is: "We get there when we do." Passenger traffic is booming and a new fledgling container port and soon to be added new auto transload center guarantee precious revenue and tax dollars for the future. I hope to add a couple of more subway set in the future, pending continuation of old people checks. And I'm even gonna try to cover up the city end of the layout with a plateau filled with grass and suburban homes, this way hiding the end tracks. It will also create more space since I'm not quite yet completed putting down all of the buildings I have. I've actually added the tallest structure on my layout, a Con Cor pre-owned hospital. But I still wish I had a proper car garage. LOL
  2. I wasn't aware of this until yesterday, but since last year Kawasaki has been testing their efWING CFRP bogies on NY subway rolling stock. This is not noted in the Japanese wikipedia entry. More recent example: KHI website: https://www.khi.co.jp/mobility/rail/bogie/efwing.html
  3. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBAINwAGzZRUX6EH_n1hvqg Fukuoka City Subway own youtube channel. Includes behind-the-scenes videos: 1980s documentaires about the Hakozaki and the Kuko Line construction: Operation and Train start-ups: How about a PV on the Nakanuma Line? And much more!
  4. My local line is starting to see some changes, namely the upcoming installation of platform doors and ATO operation. First of all, the old rolling stock was retired last month. Small rather handmade-like notice of the retirement event: Balises for the ATO system were installed several months ago. Recently the platform edges have been marked for the installation of the platform doors: Posters announcing the change in stopping points at stations and changes in the timetable. Headways will be shorter, but the time stopped at each station will be longer, thanks to ATO operation.

  6. I'm planning on a visit to New York City this summer, and want to squeeze in an hour or so of railfan photography (the trip is primarily touristic/cultural rather than hardcore railfanning). I want to get some pics of the R32 cars, which elevated stations have the best vantage points? I reckon the location will be somewhere in Brooklyn. Thanks.

  8. Two 01 series cars have been transported all the way to Kumamoto Dentetsu to enter service in March. These were delivered in several generations over about 14(!) years, counting from the test formation built by Kawasaki in September 1983 to the single 6th generation formation built by Kinki in August 1997. These two were the end cars of the last 4th generation formation, built by Nippon Sharyo, in June 1992. I would not have thought that they were so old. http://railf.jp/news/2015/02/22/160000.html and Kumamoto Dentetsu is installing the Kawasaki EF-Wing trucks, video by Toshiyuki Saiba You're not getting me under that thing...
  9. NHK was running a news item a day or two ago about the referendum on the Osaka-to plan being voted down by a slim margin. There was also some mention of the plan to privatize the subway. Will this still go ahead? It was said that the system has been running in the black for a few years now. If it were to be sold, would the sale price be enough to pay off existing construction (et cetera) debts? Or would there be other consideration to cover this? Or would the taxpayer be on the hook, while still paying fares, while the new owner makes bank? :(

    Ginza Line - vintage equipment?

Hello, I'm just beginning on dual microlayout model of the Asakusa terminus of Tokyo's Ginza Line, with a "then and now" theme, using six Ikea APA boxes as baseboards/surrounds. One third of the model will show the current era, with the platforms underneath Edo-Dori and it's buildings. I have two Kato 01 trains for this scene. Fiddle yards will be in the middle. The other end will depict the same location 70 years ago, at the end of WW2. The Kato 01 trains will not be good for the 1945 scene, and so I'm in need of a couple of original 1000-series Ginza Line trains for it. Does anyone here know where such rare beasties can be obtained? Thanks, Roy Wilke

    Seoul Metro Line 2 collision

I'm surprised there has been little chatter on the net about this accident (none in the rail-oriented forums I frequent). Perhaps the ferry disaster is overshadowing everything. Anyway, this article has the most info about the possible cause, though it is not 100% accurate, either because of translation issues, or reporter ignorance of railway technology and operation: *make that five seconds *lol http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/Article.aspx?aid=2988786 A better written article than the one above: http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/Article.aspx?aid=2988852 Hmm, maybe Seoul Metro officials would benefit with a visit to Tokyo Metro's Fukutoshin Line, where rolling stock is fitted with five different signaling systems: CS-ATC, ATO, ATC-P, Tobu ATS, and Seibu ATS- that work smoothly and safely.
