"Invisible railway workers"- JNR in 1970
bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: Pictures & Videos
Period documentary from 1970, complete with atmospheric soundtrack and apropos editing effects. A view of the modern JNR, one emphasizing "cybernetics". https://youtube.com/watch?v=75N2GV9ZCuE Starting from the old JNR of iron trains and iron men (Joban Line steam), we are whisked to the new look railway of Shinkansen CTC, MARS online reservation system, ticket vending machines (some even sell express tickets!), newfangled automated ticket gates from Omron, automated maintenance of emu traction motors, computerized hump yards, computer traffic simulations, automated printing of string diagrams, testing of the 0 series at 250km/h for running on the future Sanyo Shinkansen, and what do we have here at 17:58, an early version of touch panel to modify the running diagram?? Lots and lots of blinking lights. -
Recently a group of 40 geiko and maiko in full dress took the Tokaido shinkansen to Tokyo as part of a Kyoto tourism destination campaign event.

Been awhile since this proposed trainset has last been in the news. With the PM's U.S. visit, it looks like this model will be officially offered for the California project. Apparently tender bids by the various manufacturers will occur sometime this year. Kyodo News report via the Japan Times (yecch...): http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/04/25/business/japanese-consortium-to-propose-kawasaki-heavy-bullet-trains-for-high-speed-line-in-california/ ...efSET, something like a "super" E7 set?

bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
This Thursday the lead car of the first revenue service 0 Series trainset (1964) was moved out by road haulage from the now closed Osaka Transportation Museum. It will be cosmetically restored and then eventually put on display at the now under construction Kyoto Railway Museum, scheduled for opening in spring 2016. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWZRaww63YY- 6 replies

9 slides showing shinkansen information, history
miyakoji posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
Here's an interesting website hosted by NHK showing 9 slides. They are: title slide short history time in hours required for transit from Tokyo to Osaka, 1889 to 2045 ridership in 1000s of passenger diagram showing departures per hour from Tokyo for 4 different years rolling stock types in fleet, 1987 to 2012. 500 series appears to absent, not sure why. JR Central only? average lateness by two-tenths of a minute, 1987 to 2013. I wonder what happened in 1990 and 2003. more text, info about operation, safety, future of network closing slide http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/shinkansen/#c1 -

InnoTrans 2014 JR East E5 simulator
bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
At the recent InnoTrans 2014, JR East had a driving simulator for the E5 at their booth, all of the cab displays were converted to English. -
So, I had killed some time in Saijo City on my way to Takamatsu. Caught some nice looking and rather rare trains at JR Iyo-Saijo when I decided to hit the Saijo train barn. While looking at the display case of the little train museum, I noticed a book in romaji and was easily able to read and comprehend it. I was dead certain, that after two and a half week in Japan, my second trip to Japan in six months, that I was finally reading Japanese (although romaji) without even thinking about it. Sadly, did I learn, it was actually in English. Grabbed a snap shot of the open page and went on my way. Afterall, there was a 0-series shinkansen next door that I wanted to sit in before continuing east. Got back to the states and while going through the iPhone snapshots of things I wanted to do further research on, discovered the book title of Old Man Thunder, Father of the Bullet Train. Ordered a copy from amazon, and am about 85% through it right now. It's the story of Shinji Sogo, a man who in all reality is seems like the (successful) Japanese version of myself (and by that, a total asshole, who pretty much makes it a point to royally tick people off with no regards whatsoever to social norms). Any case, copies can be found on the cheap on amazon, and it's pretty fascinating what had to be done in order to construction the new mainline for the shinkansen.

TV program heads up (4)- 11/09(Sat.) 18:56~20:54 TV Asahi
bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
Heads up to forum members in Japan- tomorrow (Sat Nov.9) TV Asahi will broadcast a two hour special of their "Onegai Ranking Gold" quiz/information show- the topic will be the Shinkansen and buses (I assume Tokyo Municipal "Toei"). Oddly, the TV Asahi HP for this program shows no such episode information, but I saw the commercial for this program tonight, just before the Japan-Taiwan baseball game. TV program heads up (3)- 9/28 (Sat.) 7pm~ Fuji TV, Real Scope Hyper
bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
Once again, a two hour quiz/information show will air this evening (Saturday) on Fuji TV from 7pm. The subject will be shinkansen and subways. There should be a few good segments in it, if past episodes are considered- "behind the scenes" maintenance of E6 shinkansen trainsets, delivery of new Tokyo Metro rolling stock, etc. preview clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms7-iUsoolk&list=PLh4aJSJaObrZ0eMg4lpw_rgfvyInTHPKA *I viewed an interview with the producer of this program, and he mentioned a segment about the 20 year interval comprehensive inspection/maintenance of subway tunnels, which should be interesting and likely never been broadcast before.- 1 reply

So I'm pruning my YT subscriptions, and of course I'm still subscribing to RailKingJP's channel, but I thought I'd check out a few of his more recent videos. In this installment, he stands just below a bridge that carries the Tokaido Shinkansen over the Sagami River. Looks risky. location of bridge: https://maps.google.co.jp/maps?hl=ja&ll=35.390926,139.373937&spn=0.003582,0.005381&t=h&z=18&brcurrent=3,0x6019ab4b1a823665:0xd50a2e859d1939a1,1

JR Ticket Offices and Reservations
TestudoToTetsudo posted a topic in Travel: Tips, Planning & Memories
A friend of mine is going to Japan this fall and wants to ride a couple reserved legs on his Japan Rail Pass (he's considering "Going Green"). I had an ordinary pass and went in Jiyuseki on Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen when I was in Japan as an adult, so I don't remember much of doing the whole reservations thing at the ticket office. But my friend will need to for his green car reservations. My friend doesn't know much Japanese, but I see that JR East now has English-Speaking ticket offices at Narita. Do you know if the JR East ticket office can do reservations for other JR group trains for Japan Rail Pass holders? Or only JR East trains? Thanks!- 10 replies

JR East preserving 200 series Shinkansen end car in Niigata
miyakoji posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
JR East has moved a 200 series end car from Niigata Shinkansen Depot to the Niitsu Railway Museum in the Akiha ward of Niigata City. It may be 221-1510, but I'm not sure. Wikipedia says that the existing 200 series cab section outside of the building is actually a mockup. Kato 500 Series Shinkansen - Same Set Number, Different Headlights?
The Next Station Is... posted a topic in Rolling Stock
I'm a bit baffled as I've got two sets of Series 500 Shinkansens, both Kato and both with the same set number (10-382). However, they have different coloured headlights - one set with amber headlights and one set with blue headlights. The packaging is also different between the two. I've been trying to find out some more information but I haven't been able to find anything that indicates the set was released in two different versions. The only thing I can think off is that the version with the blue headlights is a re-release of the original set with the modification of the headlight colour. I'd be grateful if anyone out there can shed any light on this (pun intended)!- 10 replies
