  1. I thought I’d share this post as it has several shots of a brand new EF510-300 that will be used in Kyushu service. I really like the paint scheme they are using! https://ameblo.jp/hamidashi103/entry-12710992994.html
  2. I recently watched an episode of the long-running German series “Eisenbahn Romantik,” on Kyushu. Episode features the “Yufuin no Mori,” the steam train “SL Hitoyoshi” and other trains. The program is nicely done with some spectacular images , but is completely in German. https://www.swrfernsehen.de/eisenbahn-romantik/folgen/kyushu-auf-schmaler-spur-durch-japans-sueden-100.html
  3. Nice layout which is a very nice representation of Saga Station in 1967. The station model as per the prototype at the time is a ground level layout, arranged in the standard JNR style of three platform faces (1 ban sen to 3 ban sen) as well a bay platform (0 ban sen). Most excellently the platform length seems to be near scale prototype length, and there is a telfer gantry for parcels traffic modelled. Very much the atmosphere of a provincial city JNR station is conveyed. Also modelled are prototypical passenger train consists, most notably the numerous loco-hauled long distance expresses/sleeper expresses, which are some of the most interesting trains of the JNR era. Note the adjacent large yard is taken from a separate location and added to the model scene, the protoype was in a more restricted location.
  4. Hello all, My wife and I are planning on visiting Kyushu for the first time during our next trip to Japan in May / June. It is the only main island of Japan that we both have not been too. She has on her list of places to see Kagoshima, Yufuin, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Hakata. We know we want to take the Yufuin No Mori line to get to Yufuin so I have been familiarizing myself with that. Do any of you have any suggestions for other attractions and train rides in Kyushu. She is a native Japanese speaker so language is no barrier for us. Her main interest is food, and mine of course is trains ! Thanks

    Strong earthquake in Kyushu

Magnitude 6.4, max "shindo" 7 (highest intensity on a scale of 1 to 7), centred close to Kumamoto. Some damage and injuries, but not a major catastrophe (so far, it's dark so the full extent will become apparent tomorrow). Continuing strong aftershocks. News is saying an empty Shinkansen has derailed. http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/strong-quake-hits-kyushu-region-no-tsunami-danger
  6. Just back from a two day sidetrip to Fukuoka. One of my objectives was to pick up a string diagram of the Nishitetsu Omuta Line. These are available free to the public. Afaik Nishitetsu is the only railway in Japan, and quite possibly the world that offers this type of timetable to the public. Quite remarkable and fascinating to examine, though the pocket size requires a magnifying glass to read.
  7. Two 01 series cars have been transported all the way to Kumamoto Dentetsu to enter service in March. These were delivered in several generations over about 14(!) years, counting from the test formation built by Kawasaki in September 1983 to the single 6th generation formation built by Kinki in August 1997. These two were the end cars of the last 4th generation formation, built by Nippon Sharyo, in June 1992. I would not have thought that they were so old. http://railf.jp/news/2015/02/22/160000.html and Kumamoto Dentetsu is installing the Kawasaki EF-Wing trucks, video by Toshiyuki Saiba You're not getting me under that thing...
  8. JR Kyushu has announced a new EMU, it will replace the 103s still used in and around Fukuoka. The 305 series will be used on interlining services operated with the Fukuoka Muncipal Subway on the Airport Line. Six 6-car sets will enter service in February and March 2015. Each set has a rated capacity of 851 people; 291 seated and 560 standing. JR Kyushu has a lot of nice designs, this looks a lot like the existing 817 series, a classy commuter design.
