    Newest Kato kinematic type coupler

Hi, I have a Kato 10-1178 24 class sleeping car blue train. Question is. How do I fit a coupler that my locomotive can hook up to? All the coaches have this tiny kinematic style buckeye that I can find no information about on the web and try as I might I can't seem to fit an Arnold or any other type of coupler. I have recently returned to Japanese N and I didn't expect this. Even thinking of slapping an MT body mount in there as this is the way id like to go with auto uncoupling at terminus station. :icon_puke_r:
  2. I have a question to which I could not find a definitive answer to about KATO 20-652 Automatic Crossing Gate (the Japanese version, not the American version 20-652-1). http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10170394 What kind of power supply is supplied with this item in European, Asian, and American markets? Are they compatible/interchangeable with the KATO Powerpack power supplies? I have found out through experience that KATO provides (for the Powerpacks) two different 110V power supplies for the US and Japan, and NOCH provides a 230V power supply (they actually supplied two different ones, in 2016 they supplied the incorrect power supply with Powerpacks). Note that I am not talking about the different types of plugs; I do not care about those. For future moving reasons, I would like to own a 110V/230V power supply, or one of each. Thanks!

    Shinkansen 0-Series

My dearly beloved wife bought me a very nice Kato set (probably way over paid for it, too). It's the 10-453, 8-Car 0-Series Tokaido Shinkansen. I have a couple of questions. I noticed that it came with Rapido couplers. I really like the Tomix TN couplers that I have on my 201-series Chuo line set. Can Tomix TN couplers be fitted to Kato's Shinkansen? If not, how about magna-matic (though less prototypical)? I hate to mess with something new in the box, especially a classic like this, but Rapido just won't do!

    Question about V12 set slopes

Hi all, I have been contemplating buying a V12 and V13 track set to add to my existing V11 track set, as I would love to have a third dimension for my trains. However, I am nervous buying one. Are trains able to comfortably run up these slopes, with and without traction tires? Does it wear down the engine faster of the trains because of the stress of going up and down hill (e.g. slipping wheels etc.)? Anything else I should know? My train collection mostly consists of Kato Shinkansen trains (ranging from 6 to 12 cars). Thanks!
  5. Hi all! I have a KATO Unitrack layout and I am looking into getting a station for my track. The station area (at ground level) has place for 3 platform islands and is around 4-8 x 248 mm in length. I have looked into the stations that KATO produces, but I was generally underwhelmed by what KATO has to offer. The rural trainstation set does not fit the layout, and the island platforms of the ‘old style’ and ‘new style’ I find a bit underwhelming in terms of looks and expandability (the old style bridge can only be connected to 1 platform, while the new style bridge can only accommodate 2 island platforms out of the box). I find ‘typical’ Japanese train stations that KATO uses for inspiration generally not that appealing, in terms of looks, even though some Japanese train stations (such as Hachinohe, Kanazawa, Asahikawa, Toyama, Osaka, Kyoto and others) are much prettier. My question to you all is: Are there some alternatives to the KATO stations (that fit for KATO Unitrack in terms of height and island platform width?) What stations do you use with KATO Unitrack? Do you build your own from scratch? Or do you maybe ‘enhance’ the KATO stations with other packages from other manufacturers/other countries/homebrew modifications and additions? Pictures of your own station for inspiration is highly appreciated! Thanks!
  6. Hello, I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to adding DCC to HO models. Thought I'd put it in the HO section, rather than the DCC section as it's dedicated to HO. I have been building a small collection of HO stock for several years now, in preparation for when I can eventually build a layout to run them on. Although it's still likely to be some time before I can build a layout, it would be nice to know how to dcc models, especially as quite a number of Japanese models are not at all dcc friendly! To get the ball rolling, I recently purchased a second hand Kato de10. When I put it on the rollers to test it, the lights came on but the motor didn't run, so I took the body off to investigate, and was surprised to find an 8 pin dcc socket on the pcb. As space it tight in the model, to fit a dcc chip I would remove the weight from the body, under the long bonnet, to allow space for the chip. I would stick a small piece of card to the chassis, on the silver coloured area at the bottom of the photo, to ensure the chip will sit clear of the mechanism. The wires will need to be arranged so not to get in the way of the LED, and the plug simply inserted into the socket. I have not yet installed a chip, but will post some step by step photo's when I eventually do. Please feel free to add your own advice for other models, it would be good to have a 'catalog' of dcc installs, especially for those of us with little or no knowledge about these things.

    Kato Yo3500

The Kato Yo3500 (8035-1) is said to be a Shinetsu Type. I am interested in replicating a Hokkaido based unit such as 4413. Other than renumbering is there anything to do other than some really tiny reporting marks - I am illiterate in Japanese anyway - that need be done to replicate the model I am wanting to have?
  8. Has anyone had problems with the trucks on kato passenger cars melting? I've had two SuHa43 series cars (5133, 5134) on which the sideframes and the plastic parts of the axles have melted. After running for only a few hours, on and off, three of the four trucks on the two cars had each overheated the inboard axle, to the point that the car derailed, and the axle fell out of the truck. The first one, the plastic part of the axle melted in two, while the others the sideframe warped to the point that it could no longer hold the axle in place. I can't find replacements for these trucks (kato TR47 #5133-1D) anywhere either.
  9. Wich voltage output do Tomix or Kato use? Is the direct home current (110v or 220v) or there is a transformer wich reduces output voltage?

Mystery piece fell off my DE10

Greetings all. I was starting on a decoder installation for my DE10 (Kato 7011-2). As I carefully, gently started to remove the shell, a small black plastic part of length approximately 5 mm fell off. I'm stumped if I can work out where it belongs. If anyone can point me in the right direction for reattaching this part in the right location, I would appreciate that. The 3 attached photos show the part in question. Thanks! TTW
  11. Hi, I was wondering if anyone would have a wiring diagram for use with a Kato 20-210 double crossover? I want to use it at the end of a double track line in the throat of a 2 track terminus station, so that trains can arrive and depart from either of the 2 terminal tracks, and any other trains in the other platform of the station are isolated. It's a DC operation not DCC. Thanks in advance

My DCC installations in Kato trains

I'm slowly converting some of my trains to DCC and as I do, I'm putting tips and lessons learnt on my blog. So far I've converted (all Kato): EF210-100 (Digitrax DN13K0A) EF510 (Digitrax DN13K0A) E6 Shinkansen (Kato EM13/FL12) On my to-do list is a E2 Shinkansen and E5 Shinkansen - a gift from my parents that is yet to arrive with me! - and I'm hoping to get more freight locomotives to convert. I hope these tips are of use!
  13. Hi. Im in tokyo now and just finished my yearly train shopping. I mainly bought kato trains and tomix tracks. I also got a few kato interior lighting kits to fix in my train. However, i don't really understand the instructions in the box. I also am not very confident in removing the top and bottom of my (shinkansen/commuter train) to fix the lighting. Anyone here knows how to remove the train cars and how to install the kato lighting kit? All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :^)

  18. For fans of JNR era express dmus (count me as one), Tenshodo is releasing a new production of kiha 58 railcars (and associated types), fitted with quantum sound. Release this summer, prices TBD. http://www.tenshodo.co.jp/models/product/release/kiha58_p/tabid/879/Default.aspx Also, Kato is doing a reissue of their kiha 58 series, I'll certainly pick up a couple, especially the kiro 28, I don't have that one yet. (also this summer) http://www.katomodels.com/ho/kiha28_58/ quantum sound on a Tenshodo kiha 52: *I like the idling sound, not so crazy about the sound when running though, too tractorlike, not the sound of the dmh17h under load.
  19. I have for my future layout several KATO bridge spans, some truss type for the main spans and some non-truss for the approaches. I have each type in both "red" and "green", except the shades of red for the truss and non-truss aren't even close to similar, and the same goes for the green spans. So I would like to paint the bridges so each bridge, end to end, is one color. I've already determined that the bridge spans are molded in color, so I won't be painting over existing paint. What I need to know, if anyone can help, are: What type of plastic does KATO use for their bridges? Based on the answer to 1 above, what would be good types of paint to use? I do have an airbrush, so either an airbrush-compatible paint or an aerosol type would be acceptable. The bridges won't be handled once they're installed in the layout, so resistance to flaking from handling isn't really an issue here. I just want my two full bridge spans to look less patchworked, if you know what I mean. Thanks.

    unijoiners

One thing i noticed is that classic wooden tie unitrack joined with unijoiners looks really off around the joiners. Not only we have a double tie join (which is relatively rare today), but the joiner itself is flat gray and this creates holes in the tie pattern. So i just removed the joiners and painted the raised tie parts with a lack marker pen. The result can be seen on the attached picture. (yes they are kato/tomix converter tracks) The painted unijoiners are in the middle and can be barely seen. Imho this makes it look much better. My question is does anyone paint their joiners or nowdays just nobody uses wooden tied track anymore? (because with the concrete ties or with slab track, flat gray is the correct color) ps: I also noticed a difference in rail thickness, finetrack is much thinner, so much that kato track can't even be forced into a finetrack joiner without damaging it. I had to use two roco joiners that fit anything. (and i still have to paint the two brass joiners supplied by kato) Unpainted unijoiners: http://www.thelococentre.com/userimages/Klickverbindung_1.jpg (sorry for the bad picture quality on my attached photo)

  22. Its finally here and apart from the drap green Box everything looks amazing :) But right after the unboxing people from Europe will be dissapointed that Kato gives you a switching power supply which is capable handling 240V and has an exchangeable Plug but doesnt include the european Plug :icon_scratch: So you will either end up finding that thing somewhere online or end up doing what i did Which is solder the Plug from the stock power suplly that connects to the Crossing Gate to a USB Cable which gives you the advantage to use any USB Port or modern Cell Phone Charger to power up the Crossing Gate :angel5: The next thing i personaly didnt liked was the fact that the sensor tracks dont match the look of Katos modern douple track But you can easily fit the sensors into any 62mm Track (drill and hand file required) Looks way better now :) Running Trains is much more fun now :) But the fun can stop at the first disassembly! The sensor cables are connected with small Plugs that can be hard to unplug but you should NEVER even think about pulling on the Cables!!! Trust me You dont have to solder or to strip a Wire but its really tricky to fix it because of the size (cramp alert) But still i think this sweety is worth every YEN
  23. Hi I want control KATO switches (equiped with NCE SWITCH-KAT decoders) using SPROG III and JMRI, but have a problem. JMRI+SPROG control only double crossover, not a switches, everything works fine if I use MRC or NCE DCC system Any advice?
